Default welding compressor housing

I found a few threads on the subject but not all my questions were answered so i need some help.

-i am getting a cast aluminum 90 welded to my comp housing, and i need to know if theres anything specific that needs to be done. ie, specific filler, process, etc..

-it was also stated that the comp housing must be off the turbo. is this correct?

thanks

i do it all the time. regular 4043 3/32 rod with about 150~200 amps depending on how you want it to look.

i weld them off the turbo, but i've done it while it was on the turbo.

just make sure to scuff down the casting marks before you try to weld. there is contaminates left from casting and/or residue left from use.

thanks for the info!

not sure if i want to risk welding it while its on the turbo. but, the comp housing is a biatch to take off(massive snap ring)

just not sure if the heat will kill anything in the turbo besides the oil.

Are you going to be welding it? Just wondering because if you have a tig and some welding experience it looks like this would be an easy question for yourself to answer. And if you are having somebody else weld it they will be the ones to tell you if they want the part off or not.

take it off... grind it just enough to make it shiny.. just welds better that way..

if the welder doesn't know what they're doing, then don't have them weld it.

i've had plenty of guys say they can do it, but don't weld aluminum and it ends up looking like crap.

I prefer 5356 for cast AL persoanlly. It's pretty much a straight forward process if your welder has done cast before. If he tigs AL on the regular he should be able to pull this one off easily.
