b18c
the emissions of jdm motors are higher than usdm motors so with Cali's outragously stiff emissions rules and regulations, I'd say it's probably illegal. The cali guys that know about the emissions laws will prob chime in in a sec to confirm though bc I'm not 100% sure

i say it is read this guys post he got pulled over and got ref by the state for having a b20 in his da and for the vin.if a usdm b20 wont pass the ref neither will a b18c from japan

yeh, i read that thread, his ticket and impound was due to the fact he had a "truck" engine in a car which is apparently illegal in cali and he lied to the cop plus his vins didnt match so it looked even sketchier. Had nothing to do with his emissions levels though. But either way, yeh the jdm b18c is probably illegal.
yes a jdm motor swapped into the right car will pass smog. my brother's 93 civic si with a j-spec d15b vtec passed with no issues. i believe same goes for the b18c as long as it's being swap in a g3 integra same year or older.

my friend told me something about this you cannot downgrade engines into a newer shell but you can upgrade engines into a older shell

jdm motors are legal to swap as long as they are going back into the same car it come out of.. If you have a jdm b18c and it is going back into another 3rd gen integra than it's legal (That's what the guy at engineworld.com told me when he sold me a jdm gsr longblock when I popped my motor in my gsr).. But you have to install some sensors that are missing from the jdm motors like the crank position sensor.. Not sure what other sensors are missing cause I ended up returning the motor. I ended up buying a full jdm type-r swap instead and the ugly thing now is I can't pass smog cause I'm using a JDM P73 ecu which can't communicate to the smog machine! Weak! But I think I'd be able to pass if I just got a USDM P73 ECU.. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.. Anyway, if you're just replacing a longblock and still running off of a usdm ecu.. Then you're good.. If you're running off of a JDM ECU watch out cause you won't be able to smog..
Another thing.. JDM motors have different emissions because they run off of 100 octane pump gas in Japan.. The air humidity in Japan is also a lot higher making the air more dense, so I think JDM ECUs run slightly more rich fuel maps.. That's why they differ from USDM.. And that's why JDM motors have slightly higher horsepower..
They have more horsepower because they are higher compression, bigger collector on the header, and probably a little different fuel/ignition map. USDM is 10.6 and JDM is 11. It will pass smog if you change a few sensors like the crank position sensor and make sure you use all the same emissions parts like the charcoal canister and so on. You have to run a USDM ECU and change the exhaust manifold to a dc sports or stock or something with a Carb E.O number on it because the jdm on a type r won't pass. There are a million write ups on this if you google it. Also if you're changing the motor it has to be from the same year or newer but on most JDM motors they can't tell what year it came out of so it really doesn't matter. I think it's stamped on the head. If you're changing the motor say out of an ls and putting in a type r you have to have it bar'd in order to even get smogged.
well if i stay with a us ecu in my jdm then i should be able to pass then right. but umm i have another issue i have a p72-901 which i was told it was for a automatic and i have a manual. I was told that p72-a01 was for my car but will a p72-a01 through p72-a04 work on a 94 jdm motor
So if I switch to a USDM P73 ECU will I be able to smog my car? I swapped a complete JDM type-r swap into my 98' gsr do I need to get it bar'd? (I don't know if it's a 96' or 98' spec ITR or if that even makes a difference) I'm currently running everything completely stock JDM Type-R including the intake, header, and exhaust and it's going through a stock cat.. I even have the downstream O2 sensor after tha cat which JDM motors don't have.. Do I need to switch anything on my motor to pass?

You're gonna need an ecu for a manual tranny. Just make sure the ecu you use is for the right obd.

You might be able to get away with the type r header but I doubt it. If it has the heat shield on it they might not even notice it. As for getting bar'd you may be able to get away with it at a smog shop that doesn't really know what they are looking at and think any vtec motor in a gsr is ok. If you get pulled by a cop and they pop the hood you could get it impounded or a ticket. It's best to get the right ecu, change the header, and make sure all the other emissions stuff is on there and get it bar'd and smogged. Then when the cop pulls you and pops your hood you have the bar sticker their and you can tell them to shove it up their ***!

Sweet.. Yeah, I have the heat shield on there already.. If you pop my hood right now it looks completely stock unless, like you said, the cop or who ever know's what they're looking at.. My other problem is that my tranny doesn't have a vin stamp on it.. I don't have paper work for the motor either.. The only thing I got was a bill of sale for the motor when I bought it from dude.. We exchanged all info, driver's lisence numbers etc.. I thought it might be necessary just in case I do get pulled over by a cop.. I guess my next question is, how do I get it bar'd? Do I have to make an appointment with the DMV?
Isn't the vin number suppose to be on the block? I think it is and not on the tranny. You need to look that up on google or something. I seen where a guy switched to a right hand drive front end and didn't have the vin and it got impounded as am illegally imported vehicle. At least get your old vin off the other engine and swap it. I'm not too sure what to do about that, but the vin should be on their because it lets you know what car it came out of. Plus it might be a stolen engine and thats why the vin is not there. If it had the vin you could check to see whats up with it. Now I'm not too sure about it though because it's a jdm motor and I've never done one myself so I don't know if they're suppose to have one or not but I know all usdm ones have to have it or it will look stolen. Now for getting it bar'd you'll have to get on the internet and see where they do it in your town or the closest place you can have it done.
