Default A few questions concerning VTEC (94 ej1/jdm d15b)

So I searched for a bit and couldn't find anything that really answred my questions, so here I am, and I have a few questions concerning VTEC.

First off, my engine is a JDM D15B. The owner before me had the engine swapped in because the D16Z6 he had in there gave him problems (no idea which, he told me but i wasn't really listening on the grounds that there was a new engine in there anyways). So I'd suppose when they swapped the D15B in there, they probably hooked up everything to get VTEC functional, right? I'd like to know if there's any way I can check to see if VTEC is working properly and is engaging when it should. How could I do that?

Which leads on to my next question...my car is an automatic '94 EX coupe (EJ1). Now, I've been trying to find a clear, concise answer, but can't seem to find one. When does my car engage VTEC? I've been reading a lot of 4400-4500 RPM but I have no idea what is correct..and if this is correct, does it mean that I only really get VTEC for a small amount of time, as my auto always shifts at 5k when flooring? I had also ready 5500 and so on and so forth, but that'd mean that with an auto VTEC would never even engage..and I'd suppose it should. Also, does this mean that during normal non-aggressive I won't have VTEC engage at all?

Would appreciate it if any of you guys have the answer to these questions. Thanks for taking the time to read

did the v-tec work before you got the car? did you check your oil? and how do you know ur v-tec is not working? most of the time you cant tell on a SOHC when v-tec is on. Im not so sure at what RPM on a JDM D15 v-tec kicks but on my D16z6 it kicks at about 4700.

As far as I know it's a stock ECU, whatever came with my car. How can I check to make sure? Also, it shifts at 5k when I floor it..what should it be shifting at?

I heard that you can't hear it on SOHC engines. I figure I'll hook up a LED to the solenoidw wire and troubleshoot it that way.

I'm pretty sure VTEC only engages at full throttle, or at least very close to that. Try revving a B series to 8k at half throttle

Well when I floor it going at 20-30 it definitely jumps forward..but I'm guessing that's just the engine revving like mad. Shame that you can't hear VTEC on SOHCs.

An auto car will normally never hit vtec because it kicks in at 5 k and the tranny will shift right at 5 k... and I can hear vtec in my d15b clear as hell... but mines stick shift
