Default first ever header!!

Hi guys,
Had some spare 180 degree bends laying around so I thought I'd try and make a header for my prelude.

Started by making a Y pipe

Made a jig and cut and tacked 1 runner first

Stated piecing it together. Held on by tape at this stage. Speeds things up a lot!

Tacked

next to the ebay one

checking fitment

welded some of it up

Got my gas lense and it made a big difference!

I actually finished welding up all the runners tonight but haven't taken anymore pics. Been welding for 3.5 months now so still much to improve!

Thanks for looking!

Nice!

I have all the gear but no Idea!

I would love to be able to do this..

How did you work out what size primarys you needed?

Paul.

Not bad for the first effort....came out alright. I do see cheater cuts though, which cost you big in terms of flow. The collector convergence looks steep as well. Overall not bad though.

Looks damn good for your first header ever and not a lot of welding experience.

Did you do anything in terms of runner length/diameter calculation?

The runners are approximately 18 inches long each. I tried to get the runners as close to equal length as I could, still needs a bit of work.

the cuts on runner #4 is actually 1 45 debree bend that I cut up a couple of times and it didn't fit anywhere. Once I lined it all up it seemed to fit there so I thought I'd welded it back up on that runner.

I'm actually hoping it'll slow the gas flow a little as that runner is ever so slightly longer than the others.

Still new to TIG welding. Still got to work out creative ways of welding in tight spaces, but the gas lense does give me that flexibility.

thanks for all the comments!

Also RC000E, should I make the collectors not at such an angle? Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

i always thought the steeper angles were better or is that just for turbo mani collectors?

the angle the tube comes out of the head is very cirtical also. did you measure that? how big are the primarys? what what size secondarys are you going to use?

#1,#2 and #3 are 90 degrees. #4 is a 45 degree bend. From the runner #1,#2 and #3 run down to 45 degree bends and #4 runs down to a 90 degree bend.

The primaries are 1.75" and the secondaries will be 2 inch going into a 2.5inch collector.

bevel?

Does it really need to be beveled? it's only 1.5mm thick tubing.

i'm guessing it's probably 16g so there's really no need to bevel the pipes.

Theres no need to although i find it easier to get a neat bead if you have a groove to dip the filler into.

Did you backpurge?
