I just bought an eg ...and it has gay pin strips down it. What is the best way to remove this without damaging the paint.

Also the is black moldings that are glued to the outside of the fenders (front and back) any good ways to remove those without damaging paint.

pinstriping will take lots of time and patience, i've done it a few times and there is no easy way.

you can try a heat gun, but that didn't seem to make it much easier for me either.

It shouldn't take too long, maybe like 15-20 minutes per side. I've done it a few times and either use a hair dryer or heat gun (be careful when using the heat gun b/c the metal and the pinstripe get SUPER hot). Just use your finger nail/thumb nail to kind of scrape it off. you may also want to use a little bit of Goo Gone and a rag to clean up the sticky stuff it leaves behind. If it's not looking the way you want it to, then break out the cleaning wax and the buffer, just buff the area that you peeled and it should come out looking pretty good. g/l man!

 

I had a talk with one of my local auto detailer guys and he let me borrow an eraser wheel attachment that you connect to the end of a drill. I had my pinstripes off in a matter of ten minutes. I'm not sure where you would buy this attachment but it worked amazing. I then followed up with a buffing compound to even out the leftovers. Beware of you clearcoat matching underneath the pinstripe. Mine didn't quite match up but it was pretty hard to notice.

sounds like a heat gun is the way to go. I guess ill have to give it a try. But keep the suggestions coming. My main focus is to not damage the paint or anything along those lines.

 

please ignore the guy who said to use a razorblade...he is RIGHT, but clearly you have no experience removing a pinstripe and a razorblade will have a horrible ending for you. i noticed that nobody asked the most important question here. is the pinstripe vinyl or painted? it seems that everyone assumes its vinyl, but that is not necessarily the case, and a heatgun wont do anything for a painted on one, assuming it is a vinyl pinstripe, you should use an eraser wheel such as this one http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/sgt17900.html
use the "side" parallel to the pinstripe, at a steady speed and it should tear it right from the paint, and leave a very minimal amount of glue. you WILL have to buff where the pinstripe was, as the paint underneath will be SHINY and new and the rest of your paint will not, it is possible that you will still see the stripe after you are finished
if the pinstripe is painted on, you will need to either sand and buff it off, or you could just buff it right off the paint with some heavy grit compound.

If you have experience with a razor blade then use it with glue gone. Heat gun is also another option. When done you might want to buff it to clean it.

x2. i have done it this way and it seems to work pretty well.

 

i have been detailing cars for 7 years buffing them install pinstrips, clear bras, and also do goldpackages. The best way to get it off and it depends on how old and long the pinstrip has been on is to use an eraser wheel just like patrickvertigo and roe said or use a plastice rasor blade with a heat gun. You would never want to use a metal razor blade that would be the dumbest thing you could ever do might as well pull your car key out and try to get it off. You might also want to get some kind of solvent (if your not using the eraser wheel) to remove any glue thats left on the paint like pro-sol http://www.prowax.com its under solvents and removers it also works great for tree sap and tar removal. You will want to run a high speed polisher over it to bring back the shine and just pray that it does not leave permenant lines in your paint job like it did on my 91 Da teg ha it looks like i had someone do a custom ghost pinstrip but i am repainting my car so it was not a big deal.

Often the pinstripe will break every millimeter or two. So it can take a VERY long time to remove this way.

Use the same method to remove the fender trim. Be warned that the adhesive on those is usually pretty nasty.

PLASTIC razor blade, if you must. A razor blade will more than likely put some nice scars on your car. Credit cards are also a big no-no.

 

plastic razorblade and heat gun. I used this method on my crx and it worked great.

 

depends on what the pin stripe is made out of.

Stock? going to be a pain, heat it with a heat gun ever so lightly and use a credit card to remove, use some sort of oil based cleaner to remove glue, wash whole car, clay bar and wax or you may run into problems.


aftermarket? get a little pulled up and yank her off!

Unleaded gas + a rag to clean up the glue.

Keep these, IMO. I think it's pretty cool that your car still has them.

The painted on ones (if from Honda) are a dealer option just like leather (on some cars) and tint (on some cars).
