Default 3" exhaust question

How are you guys running/fabbing 3" exhausts on EG hatches? Specifically over the rear LCA. I've tried 3 times so far to get enough clearance over the LCA but every time the exhaust will hang too low, or be 3" too long.

What I've done is cut a 90* down the middle to make two 45* and welding them to a 90* to get the over LCA transition.

My last resort is just going under the gas tank...

sounds like your over complicating it, ive done it 900 times.

how long is your muffler? a lot of times on hatchbacks, you need to cut the inlet off of the muffler as most mufflers have 3-4 inches of straight tubing on the inlet. if you cut it off, you can weld your tubing directly to the muffler

this is a coupe, but i do exactly the same thing going over the rear axle on hatches.

here is a hatch under the gas tank, 4 inch

i dont know why i dont have any pictures of any of the hatches ive done. i need to organize all of my pictures

Do you piece the exhaust together from front to back?

The exhaust I had on my car previously was similar to the redshift LCA dump exhaust. I messed up the over axle bend so I just welded a turn down on there and left it as is. But now that I have emissions coming up I need a muffler on there.

Thanks a lot for the pictures though. I guess I'll grind some flanges off the botched axle back and try again.

I'm gonna give the LCA another shot, but when you went under the gas tank did you add another hanger off the rear subframe or is it just hung from the middle of the body and the muffler hangers?

you can def. get it over the lca.

i just run the hanger at the front portion of the exhaust, and then 2 hangers in the rear. ive done probably 6 or 7 of them like that in aluminum and never had a problem. ive done a few 4 inch aluminum ones over the LCA too, so dont think you cant do it with 3 inch!

i dont foresee the car having any problems, it has 100% solid engine mounts. unfortunately that car hasnt been run other than on the dyno so i cant totally say---but yes it will be a track only car.

i am doing another 4 inch over the control arm aluminum exhaust on a hatch here shortly, he wanted to do an aluminum downpipe too----but its a drag radial car so i suggested we stick with stainless on the downpipe. wheel hop is bad haha

See, thats a good shop/fabricator.Most people i deal with are just trying to make money, and dont take into consideration what that car will be doing or how it will be driven.

U guys do good work, keep it up.

must be like driving around in a tin can with solid mounts. what did it make on the dyno? turbo?

that particular car had issues with the sleeves moving around and having the same symptoms as a head gasket failure. its a journal bearing gt4294, he's having a new motor done now, so it should be in the upper 7's once all that gets sorted.

the solid mounts dont really make the car much worse than a set of normal aftermarket mounts beleive it or not

Mine is split about midway. To remove the back half I drop the LCA in the rear. It's all cut and welded purchased bends.
