Default question about b18a1 motors

So I'm build LS/VTEC, but the block I bought is bare I have tore down a b18b motor but not a b18a1 I know both are basically the same.. but I don't recall a girdle being there I thought I saw somewhere that there is girdle on b18b and b18a1. My question is there? can one be installed??? what does the girdle do??

The main thing the girdle does is strengthen the bottom end of the block. I would think that a girdle from one B18 block might fit the next B18 block. There's one way to find out...

Again, shouldn't be a problem, but make sure you run the right thickness of bearings. Wouldn't want that thing rattling around down there...

I may be wrong but I thought only VTEC engines have girdles? Are you talking about the metal plate that bolts to the main caps? If so it wouldn't hurt to get one. I know some company's make aftermarket for LS engines. I believe they help to stop the oil from air-ating or foaming.

BTW A1 and B1 engines are identical.

The only difference between a1 and b1's are where they put the radiator fan switch from the factory and even then these can be plugged/switched. Neither of these use a girdle. A gsr/type-r girdle can be used, but the dowels won't line up, so you will need a machine shop to drill out the other holes. Yes, a gsr/ itr crank will fit in a b18a1/b1 block AS LONG AS YOU USE GSR/ITR RODS , and the correct bearings

there is no reason to pt a gsr/type r crank in an ls it will actually make it slower the b18a/b has a longer stroke
