A guide to tuning amps?
Hey guys so I just did my first sub/amp install. Everything went well. The only problem is I don't know how to tune the thing, so I'm reluctant to play any music out of it.
Is there a guide to tuning amps? A friend of mine had a CD along with another device that made a long beeping noise and said it was the best way to tune an amp. Not sure though.
Any help appreciated

Have some good clean music playing, starting with the amps gain all the way down, set all the HU controls to "flat", turn off any "loudness", 1f it is a sub amp and the HU has a "sub volume", turn it up all the way, turn the HU volume up about 75% of the way, [3/4 volume] now turn up the amps gain until you hear the amp start to "clip", [distort] then turn it down a bit, your done.

When you say set all the controls to 'flat,' what exactly does that mean? I have like Bass, Treble, and stuff and they range from -6 to +6. Should I set it at 0 first and then tune the amp or -6? And turn my sub control to +6?

For input voltage, read the JL amplifier's manual. Setting this will depend on the voltage of the preamp output level of your HU. More than likely, leave it set to low (if you had/have an 8v unit you probably wouldn't be asking these questions).
Set the x-over to whatever sounds best to you - I would start at 80 Hz and go from there.
Leave bass boost off, and set your gain as is probably described in the manual. If it's not in the manual, JL has a tutorial on their web page if I'm not mistaken.

You still have not given a make and model, I can see it's a JL Audio "G" series mono amp, but they look alike, anyway...

PS, you can phone, "Technical Support Department at 954-443-1100 to find out what the output voltage of your amp is supposed to be, or here... http://mobile.jlaudio.com/prod...d=208 if it's an "A" series amp, they also look like that line drawing you posted.
