Default Help, bolt from valve cover stripped..

I was gonna paint my valve cover today, I got all the bolts removed successfully except one, I think I over torque it the other way and it broke/stripped, now what should i do? if I order a new bolt, I wont be able to screw it back in, because the part that got stripped stuck inside. is it bad for the engine? cos right now im just using tape to cover that hole. help please

you might want to get that out to hold the valve cover completely down and not lose oil. you can always trill/re-tap the hole, or extract the bolt with an extractor bit.

edit:
some pb blaster or liquid wrench to get it out wouldn't kill either.

take all the other valve cover bolts out and u should be able to lift the valve cover off with the broken bolt still stuck in there... ive done this b4. you can get an ezout from autozone and ull drill a hole in the center of the broken bolt (put paper around just in case so nothing gets inside ur motor) and the ezout will back the bolt out... buy another bolt and rebolt the valve cover on with the other bolts to the correct torque spec.

That's the basic process. I use rags instead of paper.

The main thing is to keep metal chips out of the oil pan.

Most of us have done this.

The tip is not to torque the old bolts to the required torque. I just use the 1/4" ratchet as a screw driver in one hand. Just a bit over hand tight. The race motor, over 100psi oil pressure never had a oil leak.
