LS/Vtec on a stock ECU?
I have heard mixed opinions on this topic and just wanted to see what other people had to say about it.
I am building an LS/Vtec for boost and the engine will be as follows:
B18B block & crank
Wiseco 9:1 pistons
Eagle H beam rods
OEM bearings
GSR water pump
GSR oil pump
GSR timing belt
GE vtec conversion kit
ARP headstuds
JDM OBD1 B16a head from Hmotorsonline.com
GSR cams
Hondata IM gasket
LS trans
OBX LSD
Clutch-undecided at this as to what one I will get
Will be going into a 97 DX so I will be running an OBD2a-OBD1 conversion harness
Now what I wanted to do was run this NA for 6 months or so while I am piecing together the rest of the turbo setup and this way I have a better engine than my stock D16Y7. I would use a stock exhaust manifold and stock fuel system with stock injectors and my question is can I use a stock OBD1 DOHC Vtec ECU without having to waist money tuning my setup for NA when I want it for boost. I wouldn’t be beating on it and probably not even taking over 7Krpm, what are your thoughts on this and if you think its ok to run a virgin ECU, which ECU would you choose, thanks.

Can you? Yeah probably.
Is it a good idea? Probably not.
I'd at least get a chipped ECU (P28, P72, whatever) with a base-map. Even that could still be risky
And if this is a fresh, never been driven before motor, then you gotta worry about breaking it in correctly, but won't be possible unless you tune it, run the correct engine management.
Not being a jerk, but don't cheap out, you'll regret it. I did.

well for the break in period, I actually never believe on being hard on it to break it in. I have always broke in my engines nicely for at least 1000miles and varied the rpm and speeds and it has always worked great for me. I know what you mean by cheaping out, I have done it before but when I get it tuned I was going to use S300 and your talking a total cost of getting it tuned with S300 on a dyno is over $1,000 out the door just to drive it NA.

a stock p72 had my lsv running like ****... it bogged hard... it caused alot of low end lag. And overall is not a good idea.. i drove my car to my tuner about 5 mins away, and that was stupid of me... Imagine how running a motor without the proper tune can kill it.. Internally...
not good.
not good.
Were you running stock fuel system with stock injectors, I guess I just dont understand why the car would run like complete crap as long as you used stock components like IM, exhaust manifold, fuel system, injectors. Essentially the only thing you are doing is getting a longer stroke than a GSR.
