Default CEL 1 Blink = O2 Sensor 1, quick question

heyya HT'ers

i recently had a cel thrown when i was driving, caused a short idle problem. but i still drove on it till this weekend.

i pulled the code by using the method in the sticky, and i just saw one blink from the CEL.

according to the code list, one blink means its the o2 sensor #1.

is this the o2 sensor going into the headers, or the one by the cat?

btw i drive a 96 civic ex, d16y8. ive been getting ~26mpg, could it be the o2 causing this?

thanks

Are you positive it's not 10 instead of 1? IIRC, #1 is in the manifold

it was just one blink, i couldnt tell if it was short or long since it blinked just once.

Well since you have a ej8, i think you just have one o2, the primary, right? If so how many miles is on the car. Its a 1=o2 or a 10=iat. A short blink is pretty short (.5 sec) it shouldnt be too hard to tell.

z6 - as soon as i turn they key, the light blinks then stays on. it doesnt seem like a long blink like the ones ive seen on youtube vids.

i have about 130K on my ej8, and im not sure if the previous owner has replaced the o2's.

is it a quick DIY fix?

a bad primary 02 would certainly kill gas mileage. ECU relies on it to see whats being burned in order to decide how rich/lean to run the motor. When that goes bad, it automatically starts throwing in more fuel than needed. Sometimes o2's can become clogged over time with soot/carbon buildup, which in some cases can cause the ecu to think it isnt reading, therefore throwing a CEL. This can be solved by simply removing the sensor and cleaning it off with a touch of brake-cleaner and a rag. Otherwise, its time for replacing them.
