Lightest/least complex/easiest to find/cheaper to buy Honda engine?
My problem is two-fold: I want to find a cheap 4-cylinder engine that I can tear down and rebuild so I can learn about car engines, but I also want one that I can use to build my very own gixxerkart-esque type vehicle.
Naturally, 4-cylinder performance would be Honda, all the way. However, I do not have any working knowledge about the specifics of any of Honda's 4-cylinder engine series (weight, power output, how many produced/what cars they were put in, VTEC or non-VTEC, etc) and thus I turn to you, Honda-Tech, to hopefully point me in the right direction, and give me some needed insight.
As stated above, I'm looking to build a gixxerkart-esque vehicle, so smaller displacement and lower weight is both OK/preferred. Since I plan to tear down/rebuild this engine myself, complexity would be bad, and thus I'm not sure if I'd want to walk down the VTEC path. I'd like something that I could pickup easily, without having to go through some JDM junkyard guy in Japan or something, and low cost is important as I'm only a lowly college student.
So, what suggestions can you give me?
Thanks in advance.

maybe a motorcycle engine is your best choice, but since this thread is about car engines, I'd suggest
one of these: D16A6, D15B7, or D15B2
All of them are pretty basic engines and all of them can be converted to sohc vtec later on. btw, the vtec itself is nothing fancy, don't get scared.

Alright, so they are all simple to start, but I could convert them to VTEC later on as a step-up; sounds good. How readily available are these engines?
