Possible to get JDM motor BAR'D to be smog legal?
Hi everyone,
First I'll say that I'm pretty new to this kinda stuff but very passionate about it. So here goes...
I'm planning on buying an EK coupe and want to swap a B18C1 (94-01 Integra GS-R) motor into it. Now my dilemma is that I live in CA where the smog laws are uber strict and gay, and do to that fact I know I would need a USDM motor to be able to pass BAR. However it's a total bitch to find a full USDM motor swap without having to more than likely piece it together (which I don't wanna do cuz I figure it would be easier to buy it all at once and know I have everything instead of worrying that I need to buy more parts). I was thinking of just buying a JDM version off of one of the many many many websites that sell Honda motors but I would then be faced with worrying about getting pulled over and ticketed/paying a fine, etc. So my question after the long story is: is there any way (like buying certain parts or doing something to the motor) to get a JDM motor bar'd so I can be in the legit swap club I've heard about on here? Any help would be appreciated. And just a little side note I think this website rocks for info on Hondas/Acuras.
One last small question as well: How much HP can a healthy stock GS-R motor handle (with a turbo kit and other mods) without going kablooey?

I'm afraid I can't help with your first question, but as far as the one above here,
How heavy is your right foot? It all depends on the tune and mods, Stock internals can hold plenty on a good tune with supporting mods, but will pop plenty fast if you try to cut corners.

As far as I am informed you cannot pass bar with a JDM motor for street use, Thats why I am going with USDM swap for my ek4. My friend said there is a way IDK HOW i wish did because id get a JDM B18B for dirt cheap with under 50k miles
my friend is selling his whole GSR for 3300 i think its a 96
its rebuilt at 150k miles one of the fastest tegs ive seen out in san jose
USDM B18C1

You can BAR with a JDM engine, but you need to follow the rules, for example if you have an EK and its a 1998 Civic, you will need to buy a GSR engine that is stamped 1998 or newer, the stamp is found on the head. The next step is that you need the EVAP Purge valve found only on USDM GSR's and aren't found on JDM GSR. Next the ECU has to be a VIRGIN 1998 USDM P72 ECU meaning the ECU can't be chipped and SN's must match, run stock GSR Intake box, and Stock GSR header, and the proper 1998 OEM USDM GSR CAT, make sure that you run the GSR engine the way it would sit in a stock USDM 98 GSR. This will get you BAR'd.
Good Luck to you.
For other engine swaps there are a few other things that have to be changed. So do your research...

It doesnt have to be out of a 98, gsr's were made from 94-01 and are all stamped b18c in japan, the ref doesnt know what year it came out of, i know its stamped in the head, what if you pulled the motor and the head was junk so you placed it with a diff one? would they tell you that it doesnt work cause the head is older? I suppose its possible, but the ref's around here have never done it.
the shop i work for has ref'd many newer cars with older motors, it just has to match up with the obd the car is, it has to have all the sensors that the car originally had, so if he is ref'in a 98 ek that obd2 so it has to have all the obd2 sensors that would come in the car to begin with. It is much easier to find a motor out of the same obd as the car its going into, so its all there to begin with, but it can be added if it isnt there.

I've BAR'd two of my cars one is a 95 CX hatch with a B18C that has a 98 USDM GSR head and a 94 JDM ITR bottom. And I ran all OBD1 sensors, and EVAP PURGE VALVE with stock Intake and header, and it passed.
Next I did my 99 GSR integra, with a 2000 JDM ITR and ran everything OBD2B and I passed.

i got a similar problem, i got a 94 gsr jdm motor converted to obd2a in my 96 ls. i got a ticket for mod exhaust and emissions because of my itr jdm header didnt have a carb stamp. my sp2 is alreay carb legal but the cop doesnt kno that. How can i avoid a state ref, what options do i have? can i bar it? i dont kno what to do, i want to go the cheapest route. im really thinking of selling my car because i dont want to deal with this...

you can find them around. but if you can find a cheap JDM motor, you can BAR it.

im wondering how the ref's usually check on the year of the engine? i was tempted to buy a cheap 95 LS swap and convert it to OBD2 specs and see if it would pass. But I didnt end up doing it
I'm just wondering because I have a 97 civic and OBD2 swaps (97-up for me) are hard to find and are usually more expensive

A B18b can pass BAR... I'll take pics of mine when its done and I have my sticker.
Find yourself a USDM intake manifold and ECU (P75). The stamp on your head has to be from the year of your car or newer. So if you are rolling in a 95, the head must say 94+ on it.

There is one more thing to consider. In order to BAR a JDM motor, the motor MUST have a USDM equivalent. This means that a JDM B16A or B18C would be FINE. But you would not be able to BAR, say, a DOHC ZC or B16B, as there is NO USDM equivalent.
