I'm pretty sure you'll need an M6x1.0 thread repair kit (Helicoil make one). Just to make sure, measure the major diameter of the bolt.

I used a Permacoil kit from Pepboys, and it worked fine. I think I paid $30 for it. However, it did not include the required drill bit, which I believe is 1/4".

watch out, do not tighten that bolt tight, just snug. I helicoiled mine, a few months later the aluminum around it cracked off and ended up bending a valve

Wow! What did you use for the torque setting on your wrench?

Any auto parts store will have a insert kit.

Is it leaking oil at the valve cover seal? if no, leave it alone and put a rubber plug in where the bolt goes into the cover.

If you need to drill and install an insert, make sure you don't get any metal chips in the oil pan.

The oil filter should catch small chips, but I don't think any one here would want to risk it.

Do not torque these old bolts. Just put them slightly more then hand tight. The rubber gasket seals, it's not about how tight the old bolt is.

At over 100psi of oil pressure in the race engine we never had an oil leak. I would just use the 1/4" ratchet like a screw driver, not like a ratchet.

I used a nut driver and did them snug. I think it had to do with the fact that to put the heli-coil in it makes thin aluminum even thinner.
