Honda Techs are stumped. Car stalls, and won't start
We have been two weeks and Honda still can't find the problem. It was stalling constantly at lights and stops. They found the rad fan unplugged, that took care of it they thought. Nothing on the test run. They tuned it up, running rich, new spark plugs. Said the sensors were shutting it down due to overheating. Ran codes and nothing. Fuel pump was pumping out fine, at 44 lbs pressure at times.
Brought home, started to hesitate but not stall. Intermittant. Back it goes..Tech drives it to his home overnight, says it did it a couple of times only. Ran codes got a 1 and 16. O2 Sensor and blip on the injectors. Replaced O2 sensor, no codes not even the injector code showed after the O2 replaced. Test drove and blip, it hesitated again. Asked if we could leave the car for the weekend, no.. brought it home. Got a smell of rotten eggs pulling into the driveway, and never again. Drove it Sunday night, hesitation minor, and then Monday to work. No stalling. 20 mile run to work. Starts driver home, 1 mile from work it stalled in traffic at a light.
Engine wouldn't start, waited a few minutes, and then tried again, fired up. Battery indicator and parking light indicator came on, but not check engine light.
July - new rotor, distributor, and second hand igniter put in. New fuel pump, and main relay put in. Fuse replaced for solenoid/alternator under the dash.
Can this be electrical? Could it be the coils, igniter needs replacing again?, or is it injectors? It is heading back to Honda in 6 hours. Need some ideas to give them.
Limited budget.
forgot to say, it is an 89 Civic DX Sedan with 250,000 km. Family owned, grandmother owned it, no outside owners...

Daughter just took it to Honda, I will call her and tell her to have the techs check all the information you 3 gave to me. Let you know later today what they find.
My CRX Did this for a while i took out the fuel injectors and my fuel rail and injectors where clogged with all kinds of nasty mess.. Smart old me forgot to put a fuel filter on when i put the LS in it.. Might be worth having checked
An injector sticking to open could partially flood a cylinder, it could really be a lot of things.
its a shame in cases like this since the ECU is not more descriptive in its code giving.
have the injectors pulled, cleaned, and bench tested.
never rule out the distributor in cases like this either.
I hate to say this also, but if the dealer guys can't figure it out, is there possibly another dealer you could try in your area?
no offense to them since im sure they are pulling their hair out, but maybe a 2nd opinion is in order?
lot of dealer techs are on this forum too, so heres hoping a few more chime in as well.

Tech thought it was injectors and they were going to clean them. I mentioned electrical - like coils or a wire off the alternator.
They called to say it was the alternator after all, not handling the load from the battery. It was up and down, causing surging and the stalling. Hence the battery light coming on was a sign. Alternator was causing the surging. Needed a new alternator...cost 550 bucks installed.
Thanks everyone. Love this board, and no doubt I will be back.
