Hey

Went to put on some locking lugnuts and one of the lug nuts froze on the threads and the wheel stud started to free spin. I took a die grinder with a carbide bit to it and don't have enough room to grind it all the way off. I think my next option is to drill out the middle of the stud so the lug nut just falls off. Does anyone know the best place to get a drill bit for this kind of job? Also size of the bit I would need as well as the type of drill bit. Thanks!

 

i'm having a hard time picturing what you're trying to say.

is it a front or rear lug?

i guess the rim is on the car?

and i'm also guessing you've already grinded away part of the lug nut?

so right now you're trying to drill straight down the stud?

 

i had the same issue on my S2k with a J's Racing lugnut/Skunk2 Extended stud combo. Took me about 3 hours to drill out the middle. I suggest about 3 separate bits. Start with the medium sized bit and then the largest. Then the smallest and then the previous i stated. Basically you wanna keep drilling until the bit your using stops and then use a different size. If that size seems to be going no where then use another size. Feel me?? Its pretty straight forward once you get started.

 

I went and picked up a Craftsman Colbalt 1/2 inch drill bit. Drilled straight into the middle and had it out in about 2 minutes. That was such a pain in the *** and SO GLAD to have it off.

I had started to grind off the lug but didn't have enough room to get to the back part of the lug to get it off completely. So I just decided I would get a bit slightly larger then the diameter of the wheel stud and grind into the lugnut and wheel stud til the lugnut was free.

 

And after all that after I pulled in the 2 new studs I ended up bending one and ended up cross threading a lugnut on another old stud and had to drill that out and and do the same thing. All and all a HUGE expletiveING HEADACHE! Glad its done!

lol be more careful with your lugnuts/studs, Ox.

What do you have them torqued to?

 

80 ft/lbs
