Default Not your typical " how do you reset oil light " question. Please Help:(

Hello all,

My name is Bart. I own a '07 LX Civic with 4,800K. At around 2K the seals on the rack and pinion exploded !!! Anyhow it was replaced in a timely manner with no issues at the dealership. My Maintenance minder came Thursday last week, and so I got some synthetic 5w20, and an OEM Filter. I knew I would have to reset the light, but what a chore!!! I have also noticed that my dash dimmer is completely in-op! I have never noticed the dash going from dark to bright, which leads me to being suspicious.I have read my manual, and many web sites for instructions, and no matter what I do the % Oil Life light wont go out!!! The only thing I see is that it displays the mileage initially when turned to II, and then to Oil Life 15%, from which I can't get it to say anything else afterwards.

I have always known that Hondas are almost bulletproof and are very reliable, but I am Figuring since the rack exploded early, and that my dash dimmer doesn't work. Perhaps I got a Monday/Friday Honda??? I'm having problems with resetting the light , and with not having the dimmer function inop, I'm diagnosing that it could be the electronics behind the dash that control the dimmer, and Sel/Reset button???

I'm going to call my dealership tomorrow, but wanted to have an idea tonight. I'm seriously thinking it's the brains behind the dash that are in-op leaving me with frustration to get the light reset??? Please could someone help me!!! Thanks in advance!

on a side note, the car has to be off with the ignition switch open to to reset it.

No it doesn't. You can do this with the car on.

I have an appointment scheduled for Weds at my Honda shop. I will let you know the outcome. Yes in this case a dealer's help is needed, and the right decision.
Bulli kid to answer your question I use Valvoline synthetic 5w20. Later

try reseting light with car running and in park. hold reset button for 5 to 10 seconds, let go and try it again. If this doesnt work there is an internal problem.

I wouldnt recommend synthetic oil for at least 10,000 to 15,000 miles
engine needs to brake in.

The Hondas come with a special break-in oil straight from the factory. Once it's time to change it (roughly 5K miles or so), I believe it's okay to switch to Synthetic at that point.

At least that's what I was advised by a Honda service manager.

Lol.

It's all preference anyway. Some people think it's better to break a motor in hard. Some, like me, are easy on it for a while. I didn't hit VTEC until 600 miles, and after that I hit it whenever I want. My car runs great and doesn't burn an ounce of oil.

If it were that easy I would have been able to reset it, but think there's an electrical gremlin lurking. The dimmer doesn't work either, and that bothers me. Had to cancel and re-schedule visit today. Bad weather. Will have to wait till Tuesday of next week to find out it's outcome.

probably around 6. You gotta remember that anything from 50% down to 41% is gonna show up as 50.

Hello all. So I brought the civic in to be looked at. The service writer verified my complaint of not being able to reset the maintenance minder, that my dash dimmer didn't work. They looked at it for a while, and found a ground wire in the harness loose, resodered (Sp?) it, and were now good to go. Thanks all for your input, and hope to be able to help you guys with my input in the near future. This site is awesome. Thanks
