Turbo safe for high miles?
Hello everyone, I have been wanting to do a turbo for a long time, but when I came to buy one, somone was telling me that I had to do a complete rebuild or a head package. This right there broke my dream. I know a rebuild cost soo much, or even a head package(about 1500-1900) because thats 75% of my savings I had for a turbo.
I have a 97 gsr with 145000miles (45k of which I put on the car). If I put a turbo to get aroun 220-250whp(most likly greddy), would it be fine or what do u think? PLEASE help me out with this. Compression values are all close (200 range), and car well maintaind with new t-belt/consistant oilchange(every2500mi) and tune up. Please dont ignore, as I have searched quite a bit(the red search button and on google) but with no success.
Thanx in advance

It'll be fine, I threw a turbo on my gsr with 180+k miles on it, ran like a champ. Made 315hp @ 12psi, but I wanted more out of it so I did a complete rebuild. Just get it tuned and and take care of it, do not half *** things and it should be fine.
while mileage does make a lot of difference..consider the other factors. any oil leaks? have u done a compression test on the motor? compression test will give u a good idea on what your motor will be able to handle but i'd still do some minor rebuilding if you're planning on dd with it. as they say tho...you gotta pay to play.

What motor? If it were my motor I would definately think about rebuilding or at least re-ringing it.
To the OP, with only 250hp max as your goal I see no problem with you turboing it as it stands.

it depends on how your cylinder walls look. Most likely all you would need to do is a hone and a new set of rings. Since you're on a budget just do the hone yourself with a dingleberry hone. I've had good luck doing it myself. Search a diy on that.
I'd probably go for some new rings maybe. Other then that you should be okay. Whats your compression at??? If you maintain it well, keep an eye on things, check oil, check plugs, all the things you can think of you will def be ok. Make sure you get it tuned, I suggest you not boost it until you get everything you need to turbo your car. Get it tuned and you'll be good. I never had to change my rings with my completely stock internal gsr. I put 70000 miles on it when boosted, give or take a few. Never had any problems.
Alright, the compression test is done and these are the numbers:
145, 145, 145, 145.
For one of them, the comp went to 175, but after a minuite or so I did it again and it was 145. I did all of he 2 or 3 time and all are around 140-145... The gauge goes up right when the key i turned, which I heard is a good thing too.
Please advice and thanx all for ur help
