power steering debacle
im trying to figure out what to do with my power steering.
I recently found a power steering fluid leak in my steering rack. I took it to my mechanic and he said the rack was crap. the boots were full of ps fluid. he quoted me $650 for labor and parts to replace it.
I am going to call around and see what other prices i can get. $650 seems just a bit high
Im debating on just pulling off the belt untill it gets nicer out so i can either replace the rack my self with the aid of a buddy or loop the lines. ive looked around and found reman steering racks for around 150-175. and the labor would be free! plus the cost of a 6 pack or two.
what would you guys do? replace the rack, loop the lines, or just pull the belt?
its getting expensive topping off the power steering fluid every time i drive the car. i would work on it now but we've gotten 8 inches of snow and counting as of this morning in boston.

just take it all out lol! that's what I did, and after getting used to the heavy steering its making me HATE power steering. It gives a much better road feel imo. Plus i get a free work out of the forearms
hahaha
hahaha
$650 does not sound bad at all,at my honda dealership, to replace a rack would be probably about $800 after parts and labor. but we also have a rate of $100 an hour. i personally have never replaced a rack on a prelude so i'm not sure how difficult it will be, but my guess would be unless you have a lift, it might be impossible because i'm pretty sure you have to remove the sub frame
