ok i bought a d16y7 w/o the tranny with only 15k miles at the junkyard for 150.. i never seen this and dont know what this sensor/whatever is on this y7, right next to the oil filter

 

knock sensor I assume, I know its in the block, and its in OBD 2 96+ cars.

 

No the 96 Y7 does not have that sensor, but I think you're right about it being a knock sensor. I thinks the 98-00 Y7s have them while the 96-97 Y7s do not. Maybe they were added for OBDIIB?

OBD2's have knock sensors. I'm pretty sure my '97 does anyways.

 

I believe the part closest to the oil filter is a temp sensor, the one prong one should be your pressure sensor, and to the far right of that pick, that broken piece is the knock sensor. The metal part is basically a bolt, and the plastic that broke off contains the fillement part with the sensor itself, mine broke like that when i tried to take the clip off... If you don't have it on the harness just leave that broken piece in.. you won;t need it anyways, that pretty much applies to the rest of the sensors too, if you dont have it in the harness, just leave the sensors in, but don't worry about them, your ECM doesn't need them..

No not all Y7s have them. The real question is when were they added. I'm thinking 98.

If you leave a knock sensor unplugged the ECM will shoot a CEL.

Finally a correct answer

The temp sensor is from obd0 though, not sure why its on that motor. y7 have a spot for a KS but do not look for one. I think its safe to say this motor was used for a minime. Not sure why they used that temp sensor though, obd0 car maybe? Not sure. Either way youll be fine.

All the way to the right IS the knock sensor. The plastic part that the connect clips to has been broken off since it gets hot and cold and gets brittle, porbably broke off when they tried to pull the connector off.

When i was talkign about leaving it unplugged, all i meant was, that if his harness doesnt have the connector for a knock sensor, the ECM won't be looking for it. I know that if you leave the harness unplugged it will through a code... It will also run richer with the timing retarded...

This is true, there is a threaded hole in that location on all Y7s but not all Y7s came with knock sensors from the factory.

I think what he meant was that the temp sensor was an OBD0 style and that this motor was probably used in an OBD0 chassis before you got your hands on it.

That brass piece looks like a block heater in a freeze plug location.

 

D16Y7s did not come with knock sensors, people. However they do come pre-drilled with the bung so you could add one. The P2E ECU that normally comes with this engine does not look for one. It's possible you have a D16Y8. Check the stamp on the block.

That sensor is some kind of aftermarket add-on screwed into the coolant drain hole, probably a heater. Normally this location is plugged. See pic below of a Y8 (no knock sensor installed).

 

BAMM THAT'S IT. lol look at were he lives. they always use block heaters in the winter. bump for that one

Like Luserkid said it could have been setup for a minime (vtec head) which would use an ecu that looks for a knock sensor. All you have to do is look on the side of the block that faces the front of the car. It should say D16y7 or D16y8 on the left/ middle area.
