Default Soft top dilema

Well I'm thinking about removing the soft top. It is in crappy condition, the PLASTIC rear window is cracked, and I wouldn't mind shedding a few pounds.

The negatives are that I have caught the top down bug, I love cruising with it down and wouldn't feel comfortable straying too far from home without some type of security (from rain and when I park it).

I guess what I want to know is..... how hard is it to take out, how hard is it to put back in if I decide it was a bad idea to take out, and has anyone else done it and willing to share their feelings?

It takes hours to install a soft top. Why not purchase a hardtop?

Taking out the softtop is a 3-4 hour ordeal, maybe longer for the reinstall. That's just how it is.

I should have mentioned I do have a hardtop.

But my dilemma is that I love having the top down and going on a short road trip, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing so without knowing that if the sky opens up I'm not totally screwed.

If you have a hardtop, go for it. If I had a hardtop, I would remove the soft top most definitely. Just be sure to check the weather on those days you have it off.

That's what I'm worrying about. I don't want to get caught in the rain either, here in VA the weathermen don't know what the expletive is going on!

How much does the soft top weigh? Would it be a noticeable weight loss?

From what I hear it's about 60lbs. I wouldn't mind picking up a CR tonnue cover, but not for $1100+.

I think I'll keep it for now, but when it starts falling apart some more I'll get rid of it.

i know that i keep it at around 50+ in the miata with the top down in the rain, the inside stays dry. (was taking a new bumper home in the miata, started to rain, couldnt put top up.)

i assume its the same with the s2k

I would say 60 lbs is definately worth removing it. I hate the fact that the S2 is a convertible though so that would probably be the first thing to go. If you like driving top down, I would not remove the soft top. I would definately leave it so when you do not have the hard top on, you have something to keep you safe and dry.
