I'm not sue if you can make it a regular Vtec without doing something major to the ECU, but I do know the Vtec-E was produced to increase efficiency in the lower RPM's which is the opposit of the Vtec basically which optimizes performance in the higher RPM range.

Get a D16Z6 head and ECU.

direct answer... no.

a D16Z6 head will result in a 1.5L setup with super low compression, low even for turbo.

the Z1 is a fuel meiser with it's 5-wire O2 and A/Fs that top 17:1 on the highway. Special low volume combustion chaimber in the head and deap dished pistons aided swirl and helped increase mpg figures even more.

the long ratio trans is the largest weakness of the VX, swap in a SI trans if you want notable performance increase.
Other wise put the money you save in fuel into an account and save up for a swap or different car to swap. (a great mpg daily driver is way under estimated)

there's no point to it.
seriously.
get a new motor, or get another car and keep the vx as your commuter.

That didnt make any sense. Vtec-E is just a 3 stage vtec setup. It increases fuel efficency by only using 8 valves then at a certian RPM all 16 valves open. Then once again at another RPM range regular old vtec kicks in.

sigh... no. it's not. (spivt11 was a lot closer to correct)
the three-stage VTEC mech in the JDM D15b that came in the EG4 and EG8 in japan only. read here if you want to learn more about that... http://asia.vtec.net/article/d15b
(or the link below)

instead of me writing pages about this, here is how VTEC-E works... http://www.b18c5eg.com/VTEC/sohcvtece.html
(note the note at the bottom, I take no credit for that page, I'm only rehosting it because it's great info)

dont ruin this motor. and by the way the there isnt a head you can swap on there that is gona net you higher than like 8.5:1 compression so when you decide to swap a mad tyte vtec head on to it, not only will you lose alot of horsepower you still wont be able to hear vtec. so it will b completely pointless. so keep the engine stock and use it for what it was made for MPG!!!!!!!

yes you're gonna need all the MPG's you can get, especially with the high gas prices now a days.... If i were you i'd just slap on a new air filter and try to make it up a hil without the vtec turning on. lol j/k

OMG. Don't listen to anyone in this thread except Relic1. Everyone else's statements are blatantly false.

Except for his recommendation about the Si trans on the D15Z1. Tried that for a short time, and it doesn't work out too well. The Z1 and the P07 ECU are teamed up to run at low low RPM most of the time. The ECU has no way of knowing if you change the gear ratios.

Best thing to do to get a good balance of power/mileage for daily driving with room to grow (and w/out dropping a couple grand) is to swap to a JDM D15B, JDM SOHC ZC, or a D16Z6. Be sure to get a P28 ECU to go with it.
