okay weird thing happened to me i was driving along and all the sudden there was popping/thumping noise and the car died, when i try restarting it it turns over and half starts just rumbles a bit and shuts off.

anyways a kind citizen stopped and hhelped me push it so i jumped in popped the clutch and it started and got it in a parking lot now so i need to fix it fast. anyways it was running real weird like only on a few cylinders. it was realy noisey and rough running. i couldnt hear any pinging so i dont think it is timing?

dose any one have any suggetions tommorow ill check for spark/ and distributor rotor and points. im sure it is getting gas i cant smell anything like gas but there is a odd smell

 

also no check engine light or code from ecu a few months back it was throwing a code 8 but that went away after i parked it to drive my other car. also it is a 89crx si

 

the spark plugs might be fouled out....or maybe a headgasket

 

ill hope the spark plugs, they might make a funny smell when they fouled out?

can you explain why it might be a head gasket? i didnt think it would have anything to do with it

When a head gasket dies from a cylinder,to say, the water jacket around it, it will run weird, run like crap and cause some pretty erratic problems with the coolant/performance. It can also be blown from 1 cylinder to another. That makes it run really poorly and have no performance.

A compression test takes about 20 minutes to do and it's an easy to rule out the crappiest problem of them all.

My guess, ignitor. I've seen these die to the pain the car stalls, then run decent enough to make it a few more miles before cutting out for good.

 

my crx ran funny when the head gasket went out....did the same thing yours was doing
then it would be good for awhile then it would start acting up again
but i would check the spark plugs

 

what is an ignitor? and how hardd is it to change?
yup i am going to check the spark plugs, the car would not start without a push. other than that it turned over easy with an odd hint of fire, and if it did start it would barely run and then die within 5 seconds

 

okay well i checked for spark and it seemed real faint, the ones im usualy used to seeing are way more hotter, and one spark seemed to be better than the rest, so if i change my distributor would this fix it? and would this also be the reson why it only starts with a push and popping the clutch but even then it bareley runs?
