Removed starter, flywheel spins freely???
I thought my starter was not expanding out enough to grab the flywheel. I checked both the new starter and the one that was on the car and they both expand all the way out.
I checked the flywheel and the teeth look fine.
Now here's the tricky part; when I had the starter off, I would push on the teeth on the flywheel and I could spin it in both directions???
This is really strange. Could it be that only the outer portion of the flywheel that has the teeth broke off from the rest of the flywheel???
Any tips greatly appreciated. Thanks. BTW this is on a b16a with a stock flywheel as far as I know.
*I apologize for double posting, but I figured I could get more exposure here and get a quicker response given that it pertains to a b16 in an Em1* thanks

Yup. Thats why I ask how freely can he turn it. Because if that thing is spinning with just a few fingers rotating it; you got some serious problems.

Im confused by this statement. You could spin it (around like a clock any direction) freely but when you push on it (im guessing towards the motor) it gets stuck on something? Are you sure the flywheel is attached to the crank? Unless im missing something from your explaination your going to need to drop the trans. What was the car doing originally?

Exactly.
The car was having a hard time starting--starter spinning but not turning the motor. Eventually, it stopped starting all together and now this is where the car stands.

well, I've never seen a flywheel out of a honda, but maybe you somehow just knocked the ring gear off of the flywheel. I can beleive it if someone had put a new ring gear on the flywheel and not have done it properly. OR is somehow the ring gear got cracked.

oh, and not trying to be a smart *** or anything but I highly doubt that he would have sheared off the bolts that hold the flywheel to the crank. Also I doubt that he could be able to turn the flywheel if it is sitting in the bottom of the bell housing(assuming that he somehow broke the bolts holding the flywheel to the crank). I'm sticking with a broken ring gear. Reguardless, you need to take it apart.

thats sounds exactly like what happened. its spinning around the flywheel. i've seen it a few times.
