any advice on turboing a h22, is it safe
i have a h22a4 in my hatch wich is an open deck. i have a turbo kit for it but after talking to a few dudes they were saying that its a kinda riskey setup due to the open deck. the internals are completely stock. it has less than 1000 miles on the engine. i have had turboed b's and d's but im relitively new to the h. what boost is pretty safe for the a4 as a daily driver, i will get the car tuned. i also would like to know how much i need to get into the low 12's or high 11's. any thoughts?
as long as you perform a compression test and a leak down check and your motors healthy then your motor should be fine.. as far as "safe boost" it really doesnt matter its whp you need to worry about, stock internals can only hold so much.. and as for getting into low 12's high 11's im not to sure.. just make sure to do plenty of research and see what some reliable setups are for your goals...
not sure how credible it is..or it could be for a different motor..but i think the cylinder walls are a little bit thin on the H motors, would need to sleeve it first if that's the case.
friend ran 8lbs on his stock 2000 prelude. pushed 316whp on a sc61 ramhorn setup. ran great for over a year until he sold the car. MAKE SURE you get a good tune, do not run your car w/out it, trust me u'll regret it
good stuff, 8 lbs is exactly what i was thinken. i talked to a guy at xenocron and he said they seen a civic with h22 on 8 psi make 337hp after tuning

ya sleeving it is highly recommended but thats alot of downtime/money! if you got the setup, throw it on, run safe not stupid (8-9 lbs or less) save up the money for sleeving it when your motor blows or something. since its a fresh motor it WILL last you a long time regardless of it being open or not it wont hurt anything as long as you tuned it right (this is coming from experience not guessing) but because its open it will more than likely take you a few tunes to get it exactly how you want it. you can boost anything and be safe if you tune it right and dont over-due it! i have stock internals on my ls pushing 20 lbs of boost daily and 35 race on stock internals for 50k miles and nothing went wrong
just to go along w/ everyone else....your block is aluminum, compared to everyone elses iron. so sleeving it is a really good idea, but being that it is a fresh engine, you have some leeway....and upgrading the internals is never a bad idea. toss a cam in there and you'll be snapping axles with that....you'll be running sick numbers

No, it STILL doesn't matter. Boost is completely irrelevant to the entire situation. We have a car at the shop make 420whp on 17 lbs with a ROCK STOCK H22 and a Full Race T67HO on race gas. Daily driven on 12 lbs at 320ish whp. The car runs low 11's at 122 and has been driven like this for a long time.
It's all in the tune. An H is just as safe to turbo as a B. Just forget PSI, concentrate on a safe healthy tune and make around 300-320whp and call it good on pump gas. We could have pushed the motor a lot harder on race gas as it is beyond conservative but Larry DD's the car to work and didn't want to bother trying to make 500whp on a stock block in case something went wrong.
And by stock I mean down to the stock head bolts.
