Default painting my grill

i didnt find what i was looking for anywhere so sorry if this question was already posted. i got a new grill for my civic and has black plastic trim i want to paint to match my car (red) what steps do i have to take? should i prime or can i just paint and clear coat? im gonna use a spray can if that makes a difference

just get a grey colored scotchbrite pad (get it from your local parts store) scuff the bitch then put a coat of primer then your color...make sure you match the brands of the primer and color of the rattle cans
