I am the proud owner of a brand new (to me) . . .
. . . race ready Spec Miata. I am quite excited. The plan is to do the comp school in August and race that weekend (I'm making the gross assumption that I pass the school). I wasn't really looking for a racecar at this exact moment, but this one fell in my lap and I just couldn't pass it up. I think I'll go stare at the car now...
geez everyone and their mother is doing spec miata now. every conversation i have with a racer its, "yeah, im thinking about doing spec miata now..."
(hold the cheese because this isnt whining, i got enough pesky miatas in my group!)

Sorry, Diane. I didn't know you were that far gone. Maybe you should seek professional help...or...I'd probably be willing to take that device of the Devil off your hands for a small fee.

Oh dear, she has actually got it in hand.
I tried to convince Diane on the trip back from Summit that she was travelling down a dark, expensive road...and she didn't listen. We rattled off the list of things she'd need even though she's buying a race-ready car...
-Suit
-Make sure everything is up to date ($$$)
-Seat, if needed
-etc...
Put up some pictures when it's all hooked up and fancy...I'll lend you my digicam.

Was sizing Chris Cobetto up two weekends ago to determine if my extra two inches prevented me from sitting in a Spec Miata...

Hmmm... I'm beginning to think that Visa is the real sponsor of this forum.
Seems like people are getting sucked into the abyss daily around here.

Congrats! I want to see the pics, too. Spec Miata is just too damn huge. The fields are getting bigger with every race. I know several people who are either are or planning to get into the class.
[jealous] Good for you! [/jealous]
Is there any word on the "height limit" for a prepared Spec Miata?
Geez - it used to be so great to be tall... you could get on all the good rides at Magic Mountain b/f your friends... now it's hard to fit in so many of the good rides

You would fit, barely. Because the hard top is in place, and the drop-top removed, there is more room to install a cage than if the drop-top were functional.
BTW, the bolt-in Autopower cage weighs 20lbs more than the Grand-Am cage that Mitch Piper builds (which has more tubing). And I'm not to keen on the way the main hoop mounts with the Autopower in this application.
I'm not sure what Diane paid, but it seems to cost about $12k to get one built to run mid-pack. That figure is roughly what Bret and Tom have spent on their rental SMs. I believe Bret has quite a bit more in his personal sprint car.
[edit] That 12k figure includes the car, the Spec kit, a Mitch Piper cage, Mazd crate motor, and replacing stuff like balljpoints and tie rod ends. And the roof, which is expensive

For us West coasters, Barry Hartzel told me about 15K for a built car. He said he builds it fast. If you don't do well, you have no excuses. FYI, Barry is a nice guy & a hell of a driver. He has many race wins & championships to his credit. I believe that he came in 2nd @ the SM/PSM weekend @ Laguna. http://www.specmiatawest.com has a link to his site.
added in edit: I should have said "turn key" not "built". The difference would be that the turn key is already tuned/tested/set up. GRM latest issue says that a fast car could be had for 10K.

Payton Wilson put one together w/ a Piper cage and new crate motor for 12k.
The only bad thing about Spec Miata is the inevitable rubbing that goes on because of the (mostly) equality of cars. It's going to happen in any spec series. Spec RX-7, Spec Racer Ford, Spec Miata, etc. But I'll go out on a limb and say that top runners of spec series races are VERY good racers.

Is that why they win and get trophy girlz and stuff?
