Default three questions in one (noob qeustions)

i have a b16a and is it bad to hit the rev cut off at 8200 i don't try to hit it but i do. i have seen b16a rev to 10,000 stock with ecu mods. so is it ok to hit once and a while? Second i have a dc sport header on my car. and one bolt keeps falling out that hold the top to the bottom but it doesn't leak. if it would leak would it hurt my engine? i was told i could burn up valve. i find that hard to believe i thought it would just sound like ****. The other two bolts are holding strong thou. Third is there any way to tell if a upper ball jiont is going out?

P.S. as i said in the title these are all noob questions but no one has an easy answer forthem. so i am hoping to get one thanks.

Rev limiter is OK once in a blue moon. I wouldn't do it on a regular basis because it a) makes you look like a ricer and b) is bad for your valve train. And whoever you saw rev a stock B16A so high with the rev limiter removed is not so smart. Don't follow their example. They can be revved that high with a lot of head work, definitely not on a stock motor. Honda put those limits in place for a reason.

Second, yes, an exhaust leak can burn valves. I would get that situation remedied ASAP.

For the ball joint, jack the car up so the wheels are off the ground and try to shake the tire up and down. If there's play, then it could be a ball joint or wheel bearing. Generally, a ball joint will go bad from having a ripped dust boot and it dries out. Check for that as well.

Actually, I can't explain the physics of it, but it's something I commonly heard while working as a tech at U-Haul. And I should clarify that I mean a severe exhaust leak could possibly burn exhaust valves. At least that's what i was always told.

Personally, I wouldn't let an exhaust leak stand anyways because of the noise.

Running a stock b16 to 10krpm? Thats rediculous! The powerband falls off way before that. Its possible to do, don't get me wrong its just worthless.

You've got to be running an open header for a long period of time to burn an exhaust valve, but it is entirely possible. A small exhaust leak os not going to be a big problem.

For the ball joint

The op is correct. My homeboy had 4 Civic Si's. 2 of them revved to 9500 rpm. He didnt do anything to them. Im not saying its smart.. Just saying that for some reason some of them do that.. Possibly chipped..

Im not doubting you or the op, im just saying a stock b16 does not make any power at that high of rpm's so theres no point to rev it that high.

I'm neutral on the matter beyond that.

To the OP, does the exhaust bolt thread in and tighten or does it kinda snug up then get loose when you tighten it. If so you need to fix the threads by tapping it and I prefer a helicoil to the original size instead of just tapping it to a bigger bolt. If it leaks at the head you can burn the valves because a leak at the head to manifold will cause compression gasses to escape and then that piston thats on the power stroke causing detonation. I have seen burned valves from manifold gasket leaks, and on an aluminum head its easier to damage the combustion chamber. This happened on my bosses bonneville truck, blew a manifold gasket and detonated at over 150 mph, and melted the combustion chamber in a matter of seconds. I think your car will be fine just fix the threads if need be and revving an engine to 10,000rpm isn't smart on stock valvetrain. Your gonna kill the springs in no time.
