I just replaced both axles in my hatch, due to bad CV joints. Now, driving on the highway @ 65-75mph, I have a fairly harsh vibration coming from the front end. It's all stock, D16 Non-VTEC. Anyway, the new...errr....remanufactured axles I bought fit fine, except the old driver's side axle (the long one) had a rubber vibration damper on it, and the replacement didn't. I got the damper off the old axle, my question is if I need to install this damper on the new axle. If anybody has done this, or had this problem, post up and help me out!

Try balancing your wheels. Maybe you knocked some wheel weights off while doing in the install. I've seen this happen.

Are your wheels OEM? If not, do you have a hub centric ring to make the wheels sit right on the hub? Try loosening and re-tightening the lug nuts in a cross pattern carefully. Use a torque wrench.

If not, then it could very well be the axle. Remanufactured axles seem like they have a lot of issues. Buy some used honda axles. You can probably find some good ones at a junkyard. If not, I'm sure you can try a speed shop. If they do swaps, they should have a billion D series axles laying around. A lot of the times, with reman'd axles, the installer seperates the joint. Once this happens, there's a whole lot of shakin going on.

Since your vibrations dont occur until highway speed, the axle might just be out of balance or not put together properly. Get this fixed, as there are differential bearings and hub bearings to consider. They can get beat up pretty bad by violent axle vibration.

Get some used OEM axles. Unless you're making a **** load of power, they are going to serve you much better than aftermarket axles.

Wheels are OEM steelies, balanced and have been rotated, vibration is still there. I do suspect the axle, since it's not OEM, and I'm gonna make a trip to the salvage yard this weekend. I just don't really want to buy yet another axle, used or not, if all I have to do is put this damper on the new axle. I know I didn't separate the joint (push, never pull), and taking the joint apart doesn't scare me (to install the damper, I'd have to disassemble the inboard joint), as I've done it before, I'm just trying to figure out the easiest, cheapest way to cure this. Thanks for the advice , I'll do some looking this weekend.

 

I believe the damper has to be matched to the axle. So putting on your damper from another axle may not help.

 

If your reman axles are from AutoZone/O'Reillys/etc, you probably have a limited lifetime warrant on them. Where did you get them?

Ahhhhh.....I did not know that. Well, if that's true, I guess I'll be buying a new axle.

NAPA...I'm sure they have a warranty, I'm gonna take my old axle back for core today, so I'll ask.
