will tire chains work with low profile tires?

do they damage the wheels or tires?

my friend has 50 series tires on 18" wheels on his element will it hurt anything?

They shouldn't damage anything, if you follow all the proper guidelines for their use (see this).

However, if you plan to drive in winter conditions more than on a one-time basis, it probably makes sense to consider winter tires instead.
