Default Thinking about getting a chipped ECU.. What should I look for?

I have a 2000 Civic Si with I/H/E, a BM FPR, and a CTR intake cam. I want to get a chipped ECU w/ conversion harness to OBD1.

My friend has an OBD1 harness he can give me, so all I need is the ECU.

Can I buy any ECU that is chipped for a b16, or is it better to get one chipped specificaly for my setup? That will run me about $175 but I can get a used one for alot cheaper. What are the differences?

Also can I do my motor any harm by running a chipped ECU? Is it possible to run to lean or to rich or to affect the motor in any way whatsoever?

How much HP gains can I see from a chipped ECU?

Thanks, all info appreciated.

You can get the ECU and the chip that is tuned for your set-up for ~$175 if I remember correctly (been a while since I ordered mine).

To answer your questions...

1)It's better to get one that's tuned for your set-up.
2)No, unless the tune isn't right...most tuners tend to make it run a little rich, just to be on the safe side.
3)Phearable.net claims ~15hp (not sure if it was wheel or not, check the website), but I know that I most definitely felt a difference in between my old set-up and the new phearable.net one.

thats kinda the only right answer sweetheart... If you are looking for permission to run around on a generic base map so you feel better about it, go ahead, but it wont be right. A modified engine will never be right until it is tuned on a wideband by someone who knows what the **** they are doing.

i chip alot of ecus myself. if your intrested pm me. but i only load stock basemaps on them. like said before, you sohuld always get your car street or dyno tuned. you can have 2 of the same cars, with the exact same set up, and get different results when tuning. i can adjust the basic stuff like vtec redline 02 settings ect, but as far as timming/fuel maps i tell all my customersa to get there ecu tuned.

Can I get my stock ECU tuned? Or do I need an obd2 ECU like a p28?

Can I just get a stock p28 w/ conv harness and have it tuned right then and there or does it have to be chipped, then tuned?

How much does a street tune usually cost and how much power can I see from it?

you cannot get a tune on a stock ecu. thats the whole puprpose of the chip, so that they can edit the program. also when buying a chipped ecu, its dosent have to be a p28, just make sure its a vtec ecu if you have vtec. i can take a dx automatic ecu, chip it and make it an exact replica of a p28.

Sorry, that's what I meant. Typo.

And I meant can I get my STOCK obd2 ecu chipped/tuned, or only an obd1 ecu?

if you have an obd2 car you will need to get the correct obd conversion harness and then you can rin the obd1 chipped ecu
