Default Help with h22 swapped 96 accord? Please.

Ok so this is my friends car, its a 96 accord with an h22a swap in it (h22 manual tranny w/ stage 2 clutch)

The swap was done professionally but he never replaced the ecu, he still has the stock f22 ecu in it. He has greddy headers to an evo 2 exhaust and an aem v2 intake and an aem fuel rail (not installed yet). He also has an aluminum koyo radiator filled halfway I think (lol)

The problem we're having here is that 1. his car has a hard time starting. The starter used to not crank, and his solenoid would get jammed. I had to pull out the starter and put it back in n bolt it up tight (it was loose originally) Now the starter cranks but doesnt start the engine. We have to push start it if the engine is cold. After that it will start up in a few cranks if its warm.

2. the engine will die sometimes WHILE driving. You can dump the clutch too to try and do a "push start" kind of start and it still wont do it. You actually have to re-crank the starter to get it going again. Its a pain.

3. his idle is horribly off, goes from 1-3.5 on his rpm gauge, goes back and forth. If I play with the throttle some I can get it to idle correctly but not until about 2 minutes of throttle. If he drives it goes off again, also has that problem WHILE driving.

Thanks for any help you guys can be, I know more about cars than he does but this stumps me. I think its his ecu as its not set for an h22. Could be why its bogging out/not starting?

I was checkin out some hondata ecu's for him. Anyone know a good replacement?

Thanks again

my noob guess would be the ecu (just get a p13 if you want to run it stock) or the other thing could be is the map sensor hooked up correctly?

Get the correct ECU, then trouble shoot if it throws any codes.

It sounds as though he's trying to run a OBDII ecu with an OBDI motor.

Which is not a good thing to do

If your friends car is obd2 and the motor is obd1. Your gonna need a obd2 -> obd2 Jumper harness and a obd1 p13 ecu.

Yep, that's exactly what the problem is.

96 and newer are OBDII, 95 and older are OBDI.

I know because I just did the swap (95 H22A in 96 Accord).

OBDI P13 ECU and a OBDIIb > OBDI harness

He said that he sent in his harness to the company he bought the engine off of to get it done. Not sure if it was changed or not for the obd2 to obd1 harness. We found an ecu for his engine, wouldnt that just fix his problem? Hook up the new ecu?

You still have to modify the harness regardless of if you stay OBDII or OBDI so they probably just added the extra sensors and what not.

If he's still running the stock accord ECU (definitely OBDII) that's most likely the problem.

If you are getting a CEL, then what are the codes?

As suggested get the correct ECU: P13

To me it sounds like a really bad ground. I had issues with the starter, as described, and it was a faulty ground wire. With a bad ground you can also start the car, but it would eventually die too.

You didn't relocate the battery did you?

No I did not relocate the battery neither did he, i am going to check all the ground wires next time I see his car. We ordered the p13 earlier today.

first off, listen to muffin man he knows whats up.
second, if you run an obd1 engine with an obd2 ecu it will generate some crazy idling issues as well as some various others. The ground issue may even stem from something not getting the proper ground through the ecu. This is an extremely complex scenario and its not possible to go into great depth, but i would try running the p13 with a good high quality conversion harness and see if it doesn't fix the problems. I also have an h22 in my 96 ex accord, and i'm having troubles too due to a bad harness, but i do have access to wiring diagrams. Check the codes by jumpering the ecu and just see what codes its throwing. and props to all the honda love out there.
honda guys stick together.
later on
