I need help! revs, dies...
Ok, so i bought my first civic today! woot....but ive already had more expletiveing issues with it that i have had with all my past vehicles combined, i still love it...anyway, the problem at hand is this, i start the car, and at idle, it consistently revs from 1-2 grand on its on, it about 1 second intervals (rev for a sec, die for sec, rev for sec, die for a sec....). Its a DX with a d15 block, and a d16y8 head, p28 ecu. If you need more info, let me know. Please help me, this car is my DD.
ahh.. the honda plague. lol. fast idle valve, and idle air control valve. the first one should be on the bottom of your throttle body with the 2 coolant hoses going into it, take it off, take one of the caps off it (you will know what im tlking about when you see it) one side will be nothing, the other side will be a wierd white looking thing with a metal dome in the middle. take that white thing out, BUT FIRST!!!! screw it in all the way with a screwdriver and count how many turns it takes, remember this number. then take it out by unscrewing it, clean the little parts in it and the body of it. then re assemble. screw the little white thing in all the way, then back it out the number you remembered from earlier. then your done. and theres another one on the back of your intake manifold. this one you can only clean the screen. clean the screen or replace it. up to you. most ohnda people know honda people with spare parts out the wazoo! so it should be an easy part to find
I had the same problem, found out I had to bleed the coolant system and somehow air goes in. Once bleed air spewed out and now no more vrrromm, then cough, then vroom, then cough. It idles fine at 750 rpm

howd you bleed the coolant system? bc today i had to drain the coolant, and refill it, and thats when everything started, so it could very possibly be the problem...do u just let it reach op temp, and until the tstat opens? or what? lemme know! lol. thanks everyone.

Fill the engine with coolant from the upper radiator hose when cold. Because the thermostat is closed. Then, watch the upper hose slowly fill up and attach it to the upper radiator inlet, the lower radiator hose should also be attached. Then start the car and on the bleeder screw slowly turn 1/4 turn counter clockwise and air will slowly seep out. then when the coolant slowly spews out. Close the bleeder screw. Add coolant in the radiator and when boiling and expanding. Rapidly close it with a NEW radiator cap and now no more air.
ill give it a go and let everyone know how it goes. any other ideas in case this doesnt work? wheres the bleeder screw located?

Open the hood, Look at radiator. Then look at upper radiator hose, then follow the hose to the engine inlet on the end of the hose there is 10mm bolt with a hole on top. That is the bleeder screw. You say a d15. So I know i am correct

another way to do the coolant, is have a funnel in the top of the rad, and make sure the rad is really full, so you want some coolant in the funnel. Then let it run through a heat cycle once, ie, let the fan turn on. then crack the bleeder open until just coolant comes out. tighten bleeder, shut the car off, rad cap on (the coolant should spill when you take the funnel out). done.
