So today was a typical rainy day, and I'm turning on my windshield wipers on the first settings (where it wipes at an interval of like every 5 seconds) so when the interval stops, the windshield wipers only go down 3/4 and then the cycle starts again...could this mean my wiper motors are going out?

 

maybe the relay arm needs adjusted?

 

How would I go about doing that? Sorry, noob at cars. lol

 

Well it could mean that the nut holding the arms on is not tight enough, the wiper blades could also just be getting stuck.

I would take a crescent wrench and try to make sure the nuts on the bottom of the arms are tight enough.

 

had this happen to a car once, turned out that the plastic bushing was shot in the arm that drives the actual wiper arm so it had play in it, so "full cycle" wasn't quite as full as it used to be. this piece can be found by removing the plastic molding that the wiper arms emerge from. (read:may be necessary to remove wiper arms first) good luck

 

What year is it?

Keep in mind some 6th gens have some issues with the return switch within the motor breaking. The solution is to replace the motor.

 

Its a 1998, and yeah, today they won't turn off when I put it in the off position. The wipers keep going Does this mean I need to replace my motor?

Yep, sounds like one of the internal switches in the motor is broken.

 

Is replacing the motor a complicated thing? Anyone have a tut on replacing it?

 

Remove the wiper arms.

Open the hood.

Remove the clips that hold the wiper cowl on. The middle one will be more difficult to take off and you might need to replace it.

Then you'll see the linkage and motor in there attached to each other. They'll both come out together. Just unbolt whatever is holding it in and unplug the motor.

Bring it all out together. Mark where the linkage and motor line up.

Remove the linkage from the motor. Attach the linkage to the new motor.

Installation is reverse from disassembly.


If the wipers work backwards after that, you put the linkage on the motor wrong.
