If the car was OBD2 the VSS would throw a CEL, now sure about OBD1. If that's not it you're looking at a bad speedo head.

Sounds like a loose connection, most likely to the speedometer.

If it was to the VSS it may pop a code - then again, it may not.

Since cluster's are a dime a dozen since hondas are so common - throw in another cluster from a friend's car temporarily and see if it does the same.

There's no place in the US that has lack of civics.

please do tell

sounds like a bad connection to the vss. You should have a code in the ecu. The only way to find the problem is by load testing the wires, or just replacing the vss.

There's no use in replacing the VSS when you don't know what the problem is. I'm sure the OP knows one other person that has a same gen Honda - plug in the cluster and see if it does the same - takes 15 minutes tops (including the drive).

I agree with syndacate. His test is easy and free to try at first. You can also check under the hood and check the vss plug make sure it's connected right (i.e. unplug and plug it back in see if that fixes problem) Also make sure that it's not just moving around freely, try to make sure it stay's pretty still.

But the gauge cluster is also an Idea
