Looking for air filter location
I can't find any pics of intakes on a y7! Probably cuz nobody spends money modding them anymore...
I just want to know where the air filter sits in the engine bay with the AEM SRI and the Injen SRI. Looking at the K&N kit, the filter sits really close to and right behind the motor. I have a '99 LX- would like to be able to add strut bars (front and rear) after the intake as well.
Please just point me in the right direction. Thanks!

the first motor in my car was a y7.
I had a short ram on it and truthfully it looked like ***.
It ended up being kinds short of where the resinator box is, which idealy thats where you want the filter.
If i had to run one of those motors again id probably keep it stock. You can do whatever you want. And if youre dead set on getting one. Just get an intake off ebay and put a quality filter on it. Alot cheaper.
what would be even nicer if you could is swap your intake manifold for a y8 one. The set up is better. Idk what honda was thinking with that top mount BS.

See that big black box at the top of the picture - on top of the throttle body/intake manifold, with the clips on it.
Yeah, that's where your air filter sits. The one (box) on the other side of that "pipe" that goes diagonally down and to the left is your resonator - I believe (I don't know the Y7 intake setup too well, it's weird and different from the rest of Hondas).
Anyways, that box on top is your air filter - if you get an air intake it'll replace both black boxes and that pipe, it will come up (straight up, towards the sky) out of the throttle body (since the throttle body is pointed up on the Y7) and make a SHARP (like 120*) turn and go down like a regular civic cold air intake. Obviously the sharp bend slows air down, but what can you do? Only answer to that is to swap in an automatic Y8 intake manifold.
Hope that helps some.
EDIT:
Haha, I read your post wrong.

Does that help?
LoL - Sorry, I read it a bit confused =].
EDIT2:
I fail at reading, I don't know man:
Seems like with some it will work.
If you need specific questions PM user NOFX. She collects rare pictures like that for times like this - she might have something. At this point I'm like, lost, as to what you're asking (not your fault).
I've been thinking about the IM swap, but it's a little more involved than I planned to get with modding this car. It's a daily driver and my only ride. I really like the WOT sound of a nicely setup honda. I'm not going to drag or even dyno the car.
It would be nice to get a little more pull through the midrange, since it's not vtec, and I rarely take it past 5krpm. I'm just trying to avoid an intake that puts the filter right above the block.

It honestly doesn't matter as much as you're lead to believe - unless it's going as far as to place it in the bumper - and if you want to do that that would be your best bet for mid-range power, just use Y7 interooler piping and cut it for the IAT and you can put a valve cover breather filter on the valve cover breather nipple. Then just don't use an elbow as if it was going to the intercooler, just put the filter on right there.

Haha, you reallly do fail at reading! J/K. I wondered- does this guy think I'm an idiot or something?
Thanks SO much for clarifying and posting those pics! That AEM filter placement is way better than the Injen or K&N setups, IMO. I think I'll go with that route in the end. I don't mind paying a few extra bucks for something with a warranty and that I know will fit. They're so cheap now anyway.
Having a car that can take a corner is more important to me than putting down a 10 at the strip. I spend so much time in the hills and twisties up here that I have no time to get up to speed.
Thanks for that info- you answered exactly the question I was asking- it just took you a minute, or four.
Cheers All!

You da man. I may just try the SRI setup first. That's really my ideal intake setup, esp. if I can fit a STB later on. If I'm happy with the performance and sound that's all I need. Then it's on to suspension bits.
Is i/c piping smaller diameter than an intake? Are all AEM tubes 3"? I would think something around 2.5" would be ideal to keep intake velocity up. I suppose I could always make my own "cold air extension" using your ideas down the road if I wanted.
It does get wet here at times, and I've found myself in conditions where I wouldn't want the filter riding so close to the ground. Hell, just pulling into my apartment the puddles get 4-5" deep.
