EF AUTO TRANS FLUID?????
I am changing the automatic transmission in my EF and i am really wondering if i have to use HONDA ATF. would i be able to use regular ATF from the local Kragen Auto Parts or does it specifically have to be Honda fluid? Again the car is a 1990 so i wouldnt think that it would need a specific brand. any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hondas are very particular about fluids...especially in automatics. Some backyard bonehead shops
will use Dex and that will cause a Harsh Shifting condition in a Honda Auto. This harsh engagement will also prematurely wear down your friction plates. Honda has friction modifiers in their fluid.
Sure you can add a friction modifier to DEX and it MIGHT be ok but, then why wouldn't you just buy the real deal and have some peace of mind.
Bottom line. Use the recommended fluid and save the headache.
We remanufacture about 100 Honda/Acura Automatic transmissions per week...so take the good advice.

ATF IS NOT ATF.
There are different additives from HONDA compared with the cheap checkers or oreillys or other parts store bogus crap.

I take it back. I searched around some sites and most manufacturers make their own kind of atf, specific to their trannies.
I've been using the wrong thing for years...
So yes, looks like you should use honda atf.
