What paint gun did you buy? What application are you painting?

Some purple POS, i've painted 4 cars with it and they all turn out with the same results, bad. Follow the mixing directions, even use extra reducer, follow the PSI guide, crank the PSI on the gun up (which helps alot), still lays retardedly orange peeled.

I know it's my cheap *** gun, i want something good.

I put a bid on an NR 2000 on eBay, it's a 1.4 tip, hoping for a 1.3, but anything is better than what i have.

I've gotten relatively good results from an HF gun, its all in the setup. Very little orangepeel.

imo altough i own 5 sata and 2 iwata i dont think you need to spend $400-600 on a sata or iwata gun if you dont paint for a living or still learning unless you just want one base on. if your just looking for a decent gun i say look into the transter or the devilbliss finish line. from personal experience both of the guns i mention spray flawless and they are under $200 a piece

I see what you mean, of course the skill is always the first factor of good result, a good clean air source is a good second.

Bought a 21 gallon compressor with a dinky 3hp, heh. Should be plenty though.

Now for the gun, i placed a bid on a Sata RP (outbid on the NR 2000), over $300 is a little much for a gun IMO. I figure RP should spray better than an HVLP for an ameteur, just have alot of overspray?

SATA are expensive, but they are like rolex of paint gun, great gun, expensive as fwak but they retain their value very good.

you actually doesn't really pay that much for ownership if you take care of it and sell it. get a used one if you can't pay for a new one

look into a devilbiss GTI. Its a very nice gun for the money. My personal favorite brand is SATA. We have 2 GTI's as our primer guns, along with 2 shitty no namers, 1 GTI as a Base gun, 2 sata's and 2 iwata's set up as base guns, and 2 sata's as clear guns, 2 iwata's as clear guns, and 1 GTI as clear gun...then a few more as single stage, mini guns etc at work. And out of all of those I typically tend to use the SATA brand the most, and the GTI. There is nothing wrong with the IWATA, but I personally like how the SATA and the GTI feel.
The GTI can be had...if i remember correctly in the $200-low 300 range (i haven't looked at the price in a while) and is a awsome gun for the money. In my personal collection I have 2 Finishlines I use as primer/sealer guns, one GTI I use as my base/clear gun and my new sata is on the way as a base/clear as well.

The cheaper guns are "OK" for the hobby painter. I actually HAD to paint a entire car using my Finishline one time. All the way from spraying DP90 epoxy, some high build primer, sealer, base, and clear from the same gun with different tips and it came out fine. The only issue i see is a higher pressure (about 30-35psi at the gun devilbiss as opposed to 16-20psi on the sata spraying clear) ment a little more overspray, and It didn't lay down as nice as the higher end guns.

ALSO using such a weak air compressor is going to vary the paint. painting with a compressor that empty out quick and run constantly will vary the pressure at the regulator. If you set your regulator at say 35psi when full, by the time the tank runs out and kicks on you pressure will be lower at the gun than when you started.

I love my Sata's & Devilbess Plus guns. I use the Harbor Freight for shooting 2K. Even if you buy a Sata and paint 4 cars with it with great results, you are getting your moneys worth since you are saving so much $$$$ doing it yourself. I suggest getting a quality gun. You get what you pay for. Goodluck

Well there's your problem lol. No but really I've used both the Iwata 400, and the Sata 3000...both are EXCELENT guns. BUT I bought an Iwata for two reasons...one, it is WAY lighter than the Sata. The Sata has a built in cheater valve it IS NOT a regulator which makes it weigh a ton WITHOUT the paint! Two with the Iwata if ever you need to replace anything on the gun you can get any ONE piece you need (needle, cap ect). With the Sata if you need a new needle, you can only buy it with an ASSEMBLY which includes the cap, fluid nozzle, needle, spring ect.) And three its JDM YO lol jk, but it is made in Japan vs germany

And PS another reason to go with the iwata is if you go with their new 400 Extreme, you can get away with using a smaller compressor bc its an LVLP gun!

sounds like your compressor is the problem. Get a pressure guage on that thing in between the air line and gun and see what kind of PSI you're getting going into the gun
