Wiring up my 230v Mig.
I have a Lincoln power mig 180. Now I also have spare 220v plug, but it has the 4 prong connector used for wahser/dryers. I am unsure on how to get it to work, I have gotten varied answers from everyone, but I figured ill ask HT.
My idea was to get a 3 prong extension and then an adpater if they make it, but havent found an adapter.
Shoot your suggestions or advice my way.

buy the proper receptacle for your welder.
shut off dryer breaker and remove existing dryer plug
cap off the neutral conductor with a wire nut
put black and red wire onto receptable end, it will be labeled
install ground wire onto receptacle
reinstall and turn on breaker
plug in welder
the only problem you may have if fixing the receptable onto the existing dyer box depending what was used. you can buy adapters though that fit on the box and then allow you to screw the smaller receptacle on.

The only problem is I cant replace the outlet, its for my moms kiln. Iv been told I can put an outlet on the other side and it can be run to the existing outlet, but im completely clueless when it comes to this stuff.
If you can't replace the outlet, then build a patchcable that has a 4-pole Male plug (fits the existing receptacle) and a 3-pole Female (fits your welder plug). Your local Home Depot should stock the parts, under the Hubbell brand. Then just get a short piece of 3-conductor #10 and install the plugs on the ends.
So I am sure what to get, you are saying:

4 prong plug---->10 gauges wire---->3 prong plug but a female end.
So it is basically an extension cable and one of the 4 prongs on the 220v outlet side is not used?
Sorry I am absolutely clueless to this stuff.
