how thick is too thick for trans fluid?
hey guys i have a ls trans on my b16 and ocationally it has a small grind in 3rd at around 8 grans when i get on it...and i was curious bc i was looking at the penzoil/gm snycromesh stuff but my buddy told me to go thicker but that didnt make sense to me bc would the gears like literally fry or break with thick oil in the gearbox??....and isnt the snycromesh around 10-40 weight?
in case you didn't catch that he said use honda manual transmission fluid. for the win. hmtf is a much wider viscosity range like 10 w 60 but that isn't really a proper description either use it 7 dollars a qt but you only need like 2 anyway
fluid is not a replacement for parts replace the syncros or just get a different transmission then run the hmtf
Edit:if it isn't that bad you could just be carful about shifting into third till you have the time to do the work.

to actually fix the problem, you could scuff the gear cone for 2nd,3rd, and 4th gears.. that should make your problem go away all together. and best of all, its free if you already own some fine grit sandpaper..
To fix it yes you need to replace parts in the tranny to mask it sncryomesh or HMTF works great.
Personally, people now tend to know those fuilds because they assume its only used to mask gear issues, when it's a great fulid and i think everyone should use it.

When I buy b series cable or hydro trannies. THe first thing I do is crack them open and inspect the bearing and gears and idler. That's it. Then I disassembly the parts that need replacement. After that I lube them up with 5w 30 and fill her up with HONDA genuine manual tranny oil.
i was searching for info about bad needle bearings and stumbled across this.
looks like you could fry your needle bearings if the oil is too thick.
