Default 89 crx with lot o problems

My buddy has a 89 crx si sohc non v-tec. He noticed that bluish smoke came out the exhaust on start up and went away once it hit the op temp. We then pulled the spark plugs and noticed there was oil on all 4, we also noticed that oil was leaking from the valve cover gasket due to a scratched edge on the head ( we believe ). We replaced the spark plug and valve cover gasket's and also put high temp sealent that was recomended to us to use. After that the oil still got into the spark plugs( but not as much ) and started leaking more around the valve cover.

My question to you is, what do you think we should do? should we try replacing evey gasket and see if that works or should we have the whole engine rebuilt? The engine has about 238k miles!

Also whould it be cheaper to have the engine rebuilt or get a new engine?

TIA

Jeff

If you have the time and the money rebuild it yourself. Unless you are looking for more power which constitutes an engine swap.

I'd rebuild it myself, as has been said. 10:1 you have bad piston rings and they're letting oil seep past into the head in large volume.

How much does it burn / go through oil wise?

your head probably needs new valve seals

Rocker arm o-rings in the head. It's a common problem, especially at that age and mileage.

I don't think it's rings, they'd have to be pretty gone to allow that much blow-by.

In my experience, whne you have oil-saoked plugs, it's almost always bad spark plug tube seals or rocker arm o-rings for these heads.

Fair enough, I figured I'd just throw it out there. New rings couldn't hurt him any

Compression and leakdown testing would be helpful for a really solid answer. Figure out where you're having problems.

We plan on doing a compression test here soon and i will get back with the results. The car is not handy for us to work on atm due to it not being legal to drive and at his grandparents house.

For the rebuild himself and i will most likely do it for the "know how"

As far as the engine swap, i know thats what he would like to do but he dosnt have the money for that now and with the car laws here in california im not sure he wants to risk anymore tickets.

Thanks for the help and hopefully we will have the #'s by the weekend.
