Default 5th Gen nearing 150k...what to replace?

Looking to do some maintenance on this Prelude my brother just bought. The valves are starting to tick and belts make a slight whining noise at startup.

Did a full tuneup recently (plugs/wires/cap&rotor/tranny flush/coolant flush)

What should be changed or replaced next?

Timing belt and valve adjustment for sure if it hasn't been done! You could also do the water pump while you're in there. You might also check for oil leaks from the crank seals and balance shafts.

Thanks. Does the balancer shaft belt need to be changed when you do the timing belt? What about the tensioner?

Good questions, the balancer shaft belt probably should be chaged with the TB (it's just harder for me so I try to avoid it ). The tensioner on 5th gens is an auto tensioner style and it is well known to fail so I would definately change that as well. There is a manual tensioner from the H23 that you can convert to that will be much more reliable....if you want to do that there's many threads and write-ups here that explain it.

What do you guys think about doing the H23 manual tensioner mod? I figure it might be worthwhile since everyone says the H22 auto tensioner is going to fail sooner or later.

So if you were to do the H23 manual tensioner mod, you would also have to use an H23 timing belt and not the H22 one, correct?

The H23 tensioner is a great mod. No do not use the H23 t-belt you use your excising H22 t-belt. All you are doing is changing the style tensioner from hydraulic to manual.

H22 and H23 have both different length and teeth spacing on the TB, so definitely stick with with H22 belt. The manual tensioner is far more reliable and makes future TB changes much quicker and easier.

I'm with hawkze on removing the balancer belt. Haven't had mine on for 40K or so with no problems. However there is a little more engine vibration. (i.e. change rattles in the ashtray now) If your brother is looking for a little quicker revving engine, leave the balance belt off. But, if he doesn't want ANY additional vibration, put it back on. Be careful, because the shafts have to be aligned correctly otherwise they are doing more harm than good.
