Default Could a bad distributor o-ring cause a CEL code 9?

The bearings in my old distributor went, so I replaced the dizzy with a known good used one, but I didnt replace the o-ring. I now have a code 9 and my car runs like *** for a second aroung 2000RPM's.

Not normally, all the o-ring does its keep oil from leaking around the dist shaft onto the head and hoses below the dist. Id have to guess youve either got a wiring issue of some sort or the dist is bad.

i had the same code issue....mine was bc of the dizzy...i double checked my wiring first....then put in a new dizzy and the code went away....later on i took the cap and rotor off the old dizzy and found orange coil all broken and scrambled inside...sooo basically that used dizzy you got might not be in tip top shape anymore

The O-ring is only there to prevent oil leakage.

Code 9 indicates that the distributor base you bought is bad. You will have to find another one. Make sure to install a new O-ring when replacing it.

Nice. Thanks for the info. I realize that the o-rings main purpose is to prevent oil from leaking out, but I could of sworn that I read something about replacing this and making the code go away.

Damn. Well I guess I have to pick up another dizzy. I contacted the person I bought it from and he agreed to give me a full refund. Good Karma

Hey guys,

I have code 9 on my 1.6 Vtec motor. I just bought this car last saturday. I will first remove the dizzy's cap/rotor to do a visual inspection. If I have too where is a good place to get a OEM dizzy, other than the dealership? Prefiably used and in great shape. Thanks...

I just bought a new distributor and it fixed the problem (couple weeks ago). The cul sensor is inside the dizzy (sohc motors) so you have to replace the whole thing distributor.

I believe the sensor is near the distributor on DOHC motors, but not inside. Check the Haynes manual.
