Oil Pan - Drain hole stripped out
So i am an idiot, i have had my oil changed for me for a while cause it was cheaper, and now i did it myself cause i got a special on oil from AZ....now i stripped out the hole in the oil pan. A couple of placecs said to just use an oversized plug. Some have said to replace the pan. Please tell me what you think.
If you suggest getting a new one, anyone know where i can find a used one. I woudl rather not pay 160 bucks for a new one if i dont have to.
Would there be any advantage in not buying an OEM pan?
Would it be best to try and tap the old one?
All replies will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

I think what I would do is remove the oil pan and either try to tap it or have a new bung welded in....welding in a bung would probably be the best way to go though IMO.

For future refrence the oil plug is no more than 16lbs of torque. No need to Heman the thing on, as long as you change the crush bolt, it will be good.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses. Even though i love to weld when i can...i have no clue what a bung weld is.

Bung is a threaded outlet where your plug bolt screws into. To repair this you cut out the current raised part of the thread that holds your bolt essentially (the bung), and replace it with a new threaded piece of OEM specifications or what ever you can get to fit in the hole really. It just has to be a hole and a bolt.
In my opinion retapping it with a larger thread and getting bolt to fit it would be the easiest. You could probably find a bolt larger than your hole, and than find a threader that can tap that bolts exact thread patern. Than find a rubber washer or crush washer as a gasket between the bolt and the bung.
To everybody else on H-T, if he drained his oil couldn't he just retap it while the oil pan is on the motor?? He couldn't just flush the motor after words or could something bad happen??? I'm ignorant to that situation.

i wouldn't tap without removing the pan. all it takes is one flake to get into the wrong place and you're done.
For what little is involved in removing the pan, i wouldn't try to lazy out on this one.

Ladies and Gents, i think it is fixed. cb7, thanks for your help with maybe geting a new pan. This is going to work for now. The thread can be closed! Thanks all!!
I have this same problem with my 98 lude, and the bolt is on there but it's not gonna survive another oil change, and it's been like 3 months so i gotta start to figure this out.
I don't think that any other car's oil pan fits in the prelude's one, I read somewhere that in 97 they remodeled the pan for the A4 model of the H22. Also, I can't seem to find any OEM brand that makes the 5th Gen oil pans; the only pan I could find anywhere is straight from Honda, and yes, it's like 160 bucks.
my question to you, iukaman, is what did u do to fix it?
I'm leaning towards getting it tapped when I do all my other ****:
figure out whats wrong with my surging idle, change clutch+flywheel, brake pads, resurface rotors, change tires, install rear motor mount insert...whats another thing on my list? lol
but yeah, if u could let me know, it would be helpful cause we have the same car 'n all
thanks
