Valve Cover Gasket Torque
97 CX. D16y7. has a leaking valve cover gasket. not leaking alot, just want to change it before it gets worst. does anyone know how much torque to apply to the 5 valve cover bolts? thanks.
Not much at all. I know that the torque spec for B engines is like 7.5 lb-ft or something. Probably no different for your D. You essentially just snug 'em tight (but not too tight) with a wrench. I never even bother with a torque wrench on mine, it's pointless.
thanks for the replies. i just came from the outside. as i removed the valve cover, the gasket came off without a problem. im having trouble with removing the 4 "0" rings from the spark plugs. its a bitch to remove. theyre all dried up. and i busted my finger open trying to remove them with a flat head screwdriver. they are really stuck to the cover. is there something i can spray to dissolve whats left of the rubber? or any place i can take the cover to get it cleaned? any places with new or used covers? i dont really want to struggle with that piece of s#!+. dont wanna get my hand busted.
lol yeah those things are a pain, when i put them on my valve cover i put them in upside down so i had to remove them and do it over..There is metal under the rubber so it doesn't flex or anything..Just pry them out.. thats what i did.. lol

wow, thats over twice as tight as they are supposed to be, i wouldnt be surpriced if they snap on you from twisting. what people dont realize is the bolts BOTTOM out. once they are bottomed out you just need to snug them. its not like tightening any tighter is gonna seal it any better all you are doing it twisting the weak bolt. if snug doesnt keep it from leaking the grommets on the bolts themselves are probably worn out not applying enough pressure on the cover.

i just pry them out as well, but ocassionally i will have to use a flat screwdriver and knock the metal part away from the valve cover to break the seal then pry.

I don't know about D motors, but my B16A2 actually uses nuts instead of bolts. Also, when you torque them down you're compressing the gasket. The bolt hasn't bottomed out until it resists rotation. The only problem with torquing more than necessary is that it weakens the bolt faster. Also, people who over-torque seem to forget that metal expands when it gets hot.

D series uses long SKINNY bolts with a shoulder on them. B and D bottom out when they are tight, snug is all it takes.
