problem with the es bushings

problem with the es bushings
So i did the shifter bushings on my car this weekend and i had a problem getting the trani side one on so i put the stock one on for now.
I have the sohc ones on (the one where the bushing is split in half) and everytime i put them into the linkage they pop back out is there any tips on how to hold them into place? i tried a c-clamp but than the metal sleeve still has to go in the middle so as soon as i move the clamp over they pop
