Default 91 DX hatch w/ d16a6, shifter too far forward

Hi, i'm just trying to sort out a few things on this car I bought. Its a 91 civic DX hatch with a d16a6 in it.

The shifter in the car is way far forward. Neutral is way forward of the middle of the shifter boot hole in teh console and when you put it in 1st 3rd and 5th the shifter almost hits the front of the hole in the console. Likewise 2nd and 4th feel like they sit where neutral should.

I've taken off the center console and it's not apparent to me what I need to do to fix this. The gears feel squishy and vague too. There aren't any grinds though and the clutch engages fine. Any help for a newb?

the shifter is more than likely on backwards. the bend should face the rear of the car.

put in new shifter bushings to help the sloppiness. it will help. Energy suspension makes them. Do a search on the shifter bushings and be sure to highlight the "archived" option and you'll find everything you need.
