CRX Backfire..Need Help QUICK(long)
alright..i was racing a gti on the highway at about 100mph..all of a sudden i felt the car start to sputter and then it made a loud explotion noise. I pulled over and the car would not start. I i checked my coolent and there was none in the resevor but there was plenty in the radiator...so then i checked my exhaust..i have a 6" in diam. whole out the backside of the muffler. I checked my spark plugs(very black and smeels like gas alot) so i figure i am running rich. i put new spark plugs in but still nothing..the day before this happened i put new plug wires in the car. i got them from pep boys(mistake) and they did not fit right. so i am thinking this could have been one of the problems. i did a compression test today and i am running about 155 in 2 cylinders and about 170-175 in the other 2. they all vary a little. what should i check for next ....please help. ......also i saw when i try to crank it now. white smoke that comes out of the intake.....
white smoke comes out of the intake????.......not the exhaust????.........you were running extremely rich it sounds like to me also.........that is what a back fire is if i'm not mistaken..a build up of gas in the exhaust (that would explain the huge holein it).........I am not sure about the compression tests at all and what they should be.....................any other suggestions anyone..............the white smoke is radiator fluid burning, but I have never heard about it coming out of the intake
yea i saw it comming out the end of the filter...yea i figured i was running really rich. but why.....could it be a bad o ring on the injector. when i got the engine it had a bad oring and was spewing gas. so i swapped that injector. but all the orings are kinda rotted...all green...i ordered the set of them and they will be here on mon. also the new plug wires will be here too. any thing to check before them...please help me out.
check your timing on the cam, the belt may have jumped a few teeth, it happend to me, my car wouldnt start it kept back firing out of the intake and it threw codes, what i did was put a long screw driver down the number 1 cylinder (spark plug opening) and i turned the engine using a socket wrench with extensions, turn it the way the engine turns till the screw driver is at the highest point, in that which is TDC, then check your cam to see if the marks line up, if not losen the belt tension so you can take the belt off, then take a screw driver and turn the cam till the marks line up with each other, then put you belt back on the way you took it off then tighten the belt tensioner and you should be set. if yor throwing codes just resting by pulling the hazzard fuse for about 10 seconds then put it back in and you should be set.
When was the last time you changed the O2 sensor? that's supposed to sense when you're running rich and cut back fuel accordingly. If you've got big injectors that'll throw it a curve ball. The low compression in those two cylinders is a red flag. waybe when you detonated you blew out a couple of ring lands. That could be expensive...
Good luck
Good luck
i did the same thing on my old si motor i was racing and "mis-shifted" and some how got it back to 1st when that happed for about 1 sec. the check engine light came on.. pulled over let it cool down didnt sound different or anything untill i shifed into sec. then it would shutter really bad and backfire.. i was getting my b16 so i didnt really think much of it but turns out i spun a bearing (to make a long story short)

is 155 compression really that low...i mean they were all within 20 or under with each other. ...if i had a bad ring or pison wouldnt i be way down in compression like 30....athe manual says that the most diff. between cylinders in 28.
well i dont really remember the exact ratio but i do rememebr it wasnt to low .. just low .. and would still work and had some power but every time i would shift, it would sputter and shake.. i would just asume rebuild it any way .. in your case

i took another look today at it. i took off the valve cover and also the timing belt cover. the belt is still tight and looks to be lined up right. but i saw in the middle of the belt..(between the cam gears and the water pump) there was alot of black stuff. it looked like black sawdust(quite a bit of it) what is that and why is it there. i think i might just bring the car into honda on mon and have them check it out and look over the car to make sure everything is right. ..is there anything else i should check before i take it there...see if i can fix it....please help out.
also i took off the vac hoses to the intake and i saw oil on them..that might be what the smoke is from....when i put the new plugs black in i tried to start the car and still nothging. i checked the plugs after a few cranks and they were black already. still rich..what could be the reason
Have you checked your ROTOR ??? The exact same thing happend to me. I was driving nice and easy doing about 60KMH, and all of a sudden I heard THE loudest backfire (almost like a gunshot), and low and behold just the day before, I changed my cap/rotor/plugs. Next day I took the cap off, and the screw that holds the rotor in came off and the rotor was sitting in the cap. Check it out, and good luck!!
The black dust could be from the belt rubbing against something, or jumping...
Also, have another look at the cam and crankshaft pully's alignment.
Otherwise, like mentioned above, something has failed in the dist... That "could" be causing your wet plugs, no spark.
Just some thoughts...
