Smelly Vents..
Anyone ever experience an odd smell from the vents in their civic? How do you fix it? I don't want to "cover up" the issue with air fresheners...in the end it really won't work because the smell is pouring out through the vents (and the car came with the vent air fresheners which only "mixed" the smell).
Does anyone know what specific points in the engine bay to look out for mildew/rust/dead animal? It smells just like....I dunno...Old man? Like oldy....
Bah. It's the only issue with the new civic we picked up but as you could imagine with heat in the winter and a/c in the summer it's going to be a problem that surfaces a lot...

haha i had a teg that had this it smelled like cat **** eventually it went away or i got used to it
i would start with the vent that lets fresh air in by the hood. i also seen a post on here where some one got a hatch that was sitting forever and he took apart the blower cause it wasnt working and there was a dead rat in there.

You can check if there's something inside your blower by removing the glove box, the metal bracket holding the glove box to the car, and then you can get to the blower unit.
Spraying air freshener or some aerosol deoderizer into your intake vents under your hood (by windsheild wipers) will significantly change the smell.
All you need to do is start up your car, put the vents on full (4), pop the hood, and spray into the intake vents for the vent system. After about 10-15 seconds of spraying, your car will smell much better. Allow the car to idle for about 5 minutes tho when you finish, with windows down and air vents on full. If the car still smells, repeat this process again. I work at a detail shop, and worst case ive seen for this was having to do this 3 times. Nonetheless, It works great, everytime.

The intake suction while the vents are on full sucks the deoderizer thruout the entire vent system.
In some cases, if the smell is really rank, we take out cabin filters to either clean or replace them, and spray deoderizer into the vents from the inside, and get it in there deep by use of airguns.

Thanks for the advice guys!
97Mike: Do you have any specific recomendations as per the product to spray? Also, could you elaborate more as to where it is (pic)? Otherwise, I'll look again. I did check out my engine bay and look for the "ports" real quick, knowing it should be near the windshield wipers...just wasnt sure which part exactly it was...
Thanks again!

Well, as for product, what i use at work is an industrial stregnth deoderizer made by blue coral, i believe its exact name is VX-5597 Deoderizer spray. The avg autostore should carry some form of an air deoderizer. I would say check that out, looking for soemthing thats more on the side of a spray that eliminates odor with counteractents, rather than some lysol-like spray that just covers it up and makes it smell pretty.

I know that. I'm just saying I've never used Lysol this way before. I've used other products. Nothing that is designed to kill bacteria though.
I've used deodorizers in vent systems before, but never a sanitizer like Lysol. Lysol KILLS what makes the stink instead of just covering it up.
