whats up guys:
SO i bought a 93civic coupe with a b16a2 in it and the head was already ported but they didn't do any valve work or springs or anything.
So the engine started loosing compression we did several compression tests and it came up to this 1st piston was 90psi,2nd 90,3rd 150,4th 120 and then leak down test the 1st piston had a 100% leak and the rest 80 and 70%. and we decided to take the head off cause we thought it was rings so we pored some gas in the cylinders and it kept the gas overnight and we did the same thing to the head and the gas went right down through.
We took the head to the machine shop right away they took it apart and i ended up getting better springs and 1mm over valves, we get the head back two weeks later we put it back together right away torqued everything to book specs timing was perfect and turned right on then we took it for a test drive not even 3miles hit vtec 1st gear,2nd and shift to 3rd and at 6rpms it just starts sputtering and shuts off, we thought it jumped timing but noooo.
took it apart again and we found this:

damn im not no honda expert, but i know it isnt suppose to look like that..help this guy cuz i want to know whats wrong...

 

have you checked the oil pan for chunks of piston? this happened to a buddy of mine who turbo'ed his car and it ended up piston meets valve and the whole thing was ugly are you sure that the deck and the head weren't milled down by the previous owner? and did you check your valve and piston clearances?

 

Yup dropping a valve messes some **** up. And since you put in oversized valves did you think that the reliefs in the factory pistons might not be large enough? Or like stated before, how much did you deck the head, and how much was taken off prior?

 

well yeah the piston is in the oil pan LOL.
we didn't check for clearance or anything cause the shop only put valves and springs.The car was idleling perfect for like half hour till the test drive.
I mean there was no sound of the valve touching the piston or anything and timing was perfect 0,0 so i just don't understand how that happened defective valve maybe?
what could the shop done wrong?

 

why would you beat on a motor right after you put it back together?

make sure you only buy cars that dont have the engine codes shaved off

that was your first problem

May have just been put together wrong or poorly. But you put in over sized valves you said, the factory valve relief is not designed for a larger valve. It may not touch on the small side of the cam, but when vtec engages the valves go down farther. Could have hit then. It's over now, time to rebuild it better.

Where do you see a shaved off engine code?

Ok so new up date about what happened:
well i have stage 2 skunk2 cams and they are too big for oversized valves the valves were touching because of that.

 

In the 4th picture from the top it seems like the code is missing in the lower left hand side of the pic.

 

that sucks.
least you have a head and tranny to use.
i say get a b20 block and do it right this time.

hey i have the skunk pro +2 cams and it says on the packet and instructions not to use over sized valves. maybe you could source a b20 bottom end and make a frankie?

 

So was the rest of the stem of that valve still on the top side of the motor or did you only find the retainer and the spring.

Broken valve=your fault
No stem wedged in the valve guide or piece of valve on the top side of the motor=there fault

Its going to be difficult to tell now that you've taken everything apart. Careful disassembly might have let you discover this but now that you've taken everything apart well probley never know.

 

This is the direct result of not researching when installing your ****. It says right on the damn box for the cams that you CAN NOT install oversized valves. Expensive mistake huh?
